The opportunity: We have a fantastic opportunity to join a busy RF Design Team supporting the RF testing and development of some of the most cutting edge and exciting projects in the defence industry.

Our team is looking for an RF Laboratory Technician to provide day to day support to the RF Designers across various tasks including testing, component level assembly and rework, mainly on development or prototype boards.

You’ll use your experience of RF circuits and components covering a wide frequency range up to high GHz, as well as fault finding, rework, soldering and use of general laboratory equipment.

Training and guidance will be provided for the right candidate.

What we’re looking for from you:

  • Familiar with RF Circuits and components across a wide range of frequencies
  • Practical skills – soldering and rework at SMT component level – ideally qualified to IPC 610 but training can be provided, fault finding and RF component level assembly
  • Use of RF Laboratory Test Equipment – Spectrum Analysers, VNA’s, Power meters
  • Ability to perform automated testing – MATLAB, Python & LabView.
  • Self-starter – well organised, motivated and shows initiative.

Much of our current work is centred on the G1X radar, which is the newest radar in Saab’s portfolio – a software defined radar with a regular capability update cycle post-delivery, as well as an established production line. As an Inspection & Test Technician you will work in the Production department as part of the Test & Inspection team. Duties will be (but not limited to) inspecting produced items and units and testing units and the G1X Radar. Whilst the role is based in Fareham there may be opportunities for trips to Sweden for training and knowledge transfer.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Support Inspection & Test Team Leader by being proactive to achieve production goals
  • Ensure any soldering and electrical looming is carried out to a high standard in line with company standards and procedures. Test functionality of produced units and sub-assemblies
  • Help and support others with training when possible, by passing on knowledge and skills.
  • Understand and interpret electrical drawings.
  • Follow documented processes and record results
  • Carry out any other duties as detailed by the team leader or Production Supervisor. Maintain personal ability in, and appropriate use of, all relevant IT (Information & Technology) and other systems required to adequately perform the role.
  • Act ethically, with integrity and in the best interest of the business at all times
  • Maintain a professional and supportive relationship with team members and other departments in order to deliver business and delivery objectives or deadlines.
  • Test radar systems, including conducting thorough inspections and performance evaluations to ensure they meet required specifications.
  • Troubleshoot radar systems by identifying and resolving technical issues, performing diagnostic tests, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Liaise with Swedish colleagues over Teams, email, or in person to collaborate on projects, share knowledge, and ensure effective communication and coordination across teams.

Required Skills:

  • Be familiar with use of standard test and measurement equipment used in either a communications, radar or electronic warfare systems environment
  • Enjoy working and developing in a team
  • Like cooperating with others but are capable of working individually as well
  • Good technical communication skills
  • Computer literate
  • Capable of good time management
  • During your employment you will handle tasks and materials that are classified as military secret and therefore you must have a UK or Swedish citizenship
  • Experienced in the use of multi-meters, Oscilloscopes, Spectrum and Network Analysers with a knowledge of both analogue and digital systems.
  • Good knowledge of electrical and electronic components and principles.
  • Have 3-5 years of minimum RF experience, with a proven track record of troubleshooting.

Desired Skills:

  • Capable of inspecting to IPC class 3 standard
  • Have a background in inspection, testing and measurement (3-5 years minimum)
  • As a person you are positive, social, result oriented and a team player.
  • Proficiency in documenting procedures, findings, and recommendations.

  • Excellent working knowledge of the Cadence Virtuoso design environment
  • Detailed design experience with analog/mixed-signal circuits on advanced CMOS nodes
  • Demonstrate strong teamwork and interpersonal skills while being able to work independently on complex tasks
  • Clear and concise communication and presentation skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Electronic Engineering or a related field

The EMC design engineer will focus on providing the project teams with advice and guidance on the design of products to ensure that they meet the EMC requirements, they will also be responsible for designing and producing test plans and bespoke electronic test solutions. The EMC team provides specialist advice, strategy and guidance to all complex weapon programmes from the concept through design, proving and into in service. You will work across multiple programmes and across three main strands: requirements, design and proving. You will have access to extensive military EMC test capabilities also managed separately within the EMC department, that will be used to qualify the MBDA product developments against the electromagnetic environment requirements. Your team will be responsible for investigating and/or deploying novel digital proving techniques and methodology. In addition to supporting the project teams directly, you will be managing and coordinating the project activities your team performs.

As Electromagnetic Engineer, you’ll work in a matrix organisation and report operationally through OMNIA Training and functionally through the Global Networks Lead. Ultimately, you’ll work for the British Army, championing innovation, and helping shape the future of military collective training.

The Electromagnetic Engineer role requires a customer first mindset, strong stakeholder engagement skills, and the ability work in a multidisciplinary engineering team in a complex and evolving environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain the Electromagnetic Spectrum Management Plan (ESMP) covering both design and operational phases of the programme.
  • Ensure compliance with electromagnetic standards including Defence Standard 59-411 and MOD spectrum governance processes.
  • Manage electromagnetic spectrum planning, allocation, and coordination for systems operating within training and operational environments.
  • Liaise with MOD authorities and regulatory bodies, including the Defence Electromagnetic Activity, to obtain spectrum allocations and approvals.
  • Conduct electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) assessments to minimise harmful interference across systems.
  • Develop frequency allocation matrices and ensure spectrum deconfliction across all systems participating in training exercises.
  • Support system design reviews to ensure electromagnetic compatibility and spectrum compliance are incorporated during engineering design phases.
  • Perform risk assessments related to electromagnetic emissions, including safety assessments for non-ionising radiation exposure.
  • Monitor spectrum usage during exercises or operational deployments and implement corrective actions where required.
  • Support modelling and simulation activities to analyse electromagnetic interactions and predict operational spectrum behaviour.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Proven experience in electromagnetic spectrum management, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), or electromagnetic interference (EMI) within complex technical environments.
  • Strong knowledge of defence standards related to electromagnetic management, including Defence Standard 59-411.
  • Experience working with spectrum planning, frequency allocation, and spectrum management processes.
  • Familiarity with regulatory and governance frameworks governing electromagnetic spectrum use.
  • Experience conducting EMI/EMC risk assessments and ensuring equipment compliance with relevant standards.
  • Experience supporting system design reviews and engineering governance processes.
  • Ability to analyse electromagnetic interactions across complex system-of-systems environments.
  • Strong understanding of radio frequency (RF) systems and spectrum-dependent technologies.

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • Experience working within defence training environments or modelling and simulation systems.

  • A solid understanding of EMC theory and design principles, with practical experience applying these in real-world engineering scenarios
  • Hands-on experience of vehicle-level EMC testing within the automotive sector
  • Good working knowledge of automotive EMC legal requirements and relevant international standards
  • Understanding of high-voltage (HV) vehicle systems and associated components
  • Degree-qualified in a relevant engineering discipline, or able to demonstrate equivalent, proven industry experience
