Overview We are seeking a Principal EMC Engineer with specialist knowledge in Military and Aerospace EMC standards (e.g. DEF STAN 59-411, MIL-STD-461, RTCA DO-160) to join our expert team. This is a senior-level position providing technical leadership both internally and externally – from supporting UKAS ISO/IEC 17025 audits and developing procedures, to mentoring engineers and engaging directly with customers.

This role is ideal for someone with deep EMC technical knowledge who is confident in leading complex projects, reviewing and signing technical reports, and shaping the future of testing for defence, aerospace, and other high-integrity sectors.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership across Mil/Aero EMC testing activities, ensuring high-quality execution and compliance.
  • Serve as a report signatory for test reports under ISO/IEC 17025, ensuring accuracy, technical integrity, and traceability.
  • Support and guide engineers in test preparation, execution, and troubleshooting for DEF STAN, MIL-STD-461, DO-160, and related standards.
  • Collaborate with the sales and commercial teams to scope complex projects and provide pre-sales technical support.
  • Engage directly with clients and stakeholders to resolve technical queries and ensure successful project delivery.
  • Develop and maintain internal procedures, test methods, and documentation in line with evolving standards and best practices.
  • Play a key role in audit readiness and compliance for UKAS ISO/IEC 17025 assessments, including non-conformance resolution and continual improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to the training and mentoring of junior engineers and team members.

Skills / Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical, Electronic, or related Engineering discipline, or equivalent industry experience in EMC testing.
  • Extensive experience in EMC testing for Military and Aerospace applications.
  • Strong understanding of DEF STAN 59-411, MIL-STD-461, RTCA DO-160, and similar defence/aerospace EMC standards.
  • Proven experience as a report signatory within an accredited lab.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to guide both internal staff and external customers.
  • Demonstrable experience in developing and maintaining technical procedures and ensuring quality standards.
  • Familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025 audit processes and requirements.

  • Availability to work Monday to Thursday: 08:30–17:00, and Friday: 08:30–15:45 (37.5 hours per week).

RF Test Engineer

  • Develop and review detailed work instructions, translating complex RF engineering requirements into clear technician-level procedures.

Key Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of RF fundamentals with hands-on experience using VNAs, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, and other RF test equipment.

  • Proven ability to manage calibration programs and maintain quality standards for RF equipment and facilities.
  • Clear communication and collaboration skills across engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams.

Preferred Skills:

  • Performing schematic capture and PCB layout

The role

As a Senior Radio Frequency (RF) Antenna Design Engineer, you’ll work closely with our Principal RF Engineer on RF antenna design, while also contributing to wider electronic hardware design, research, and testing. As part of a mixed team of software, hardware, and Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) engineers, you’ll work on projects ranging from embedded antenna design to propagation modelling.

Responsibilities span component-level RF design involvement across the full lifecycle from design to delivery, identifying and helping to mitigate technical risks, and producing high-quality design and test documentation. You’ll also be involved in hardware Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and system-level testing and verification, contributing to future antenna and RF technique research, developing and maintaining BASH/C wrapper helper scripts, and integrating with and testing a variety of capabilities.

About you

You bring several years of experience in a similar role, preferably with practical experience in component-level Antenna design. Your background may also include working on matching networks, filter design, PA or LNA analysis and specification or other component-level electronic design. You also have:

  • experience working with Vector Network Analysers and Smith Charts
  • the ability to engage internal and external customers and work with other organisations
  • a proactive mindset, with the motivation to spot opportunities, adapt quickly and learn new skills
  • experience in successfully delivering projects from design to delivery

The Opportunity The newly established Integration & Systems Validation (ISV) team within the Actuation Systems Centre of Excellence (CofEx) is looking for a talented engineer to join our mission. You will be instrumental in demonstrating that our state-of-the-art Actuator systems are fit-for-purpose and operate flawlessly even in the most extreme electromagnetic environments.

Reporting to the Actuation Systems Proving Lead, you will be responsible for planning, conducting and reporting on trials across the full design lifecycle, including product de-risk, demonstration and qualification. You will:

  • Prepare for trial: Lead trials readiness reviews, ensuring all test hardware, software, and facilities are prepared and all aspects, including safety, are assessed and documented.
  • Coordinate: Manage and coordinate all aspects of the Actuator under test, securing timely availability and logistics of all hardware, software and test equipment required.
  • Execute tests: Be hands-on in supporting the physical test setup and work-up in specialised facilities, such as EMC anechoic and reverberation chambers.
  • Record comprehensively: Produce accurate logs of all proving activities, raising issues in a timely and detailed way.
  • Analyse data: Record and meticulously analyse trial data to verify that the actuator meets its stringent requirements.
  • Report findings: Author comprehensive trial conduct reports to support the product’s development and certification.
  • Support certification: Provide critical data and reports to support the formal certification of actuator products for use.
  • Interface: Act as the primary engineering interface between the customer and the test facilities, with deep knowledge of how the product in the full range of intended RF environments.
  • Communicate: Ensuring seamless coordination and information flow throughout the trial.
  • Manage others: As the team grows, there will be the opportunity to manage a small team of talented proving engineers, developing their skills and driving results.

This role will reward individuals who enjoy hand-on testing of products in physical environments, such as vulnerabilities to and emissions of RF and electrical energy.

Dynamic working is available for the role, especially during trial preparation and reporting. During trial campaigns the role is predominantly based on site using MBDA’s industry-leading EMC facilities in Bristol, with occasional travel required when using external test houses.

As this is a newly established team, there is the opportunity to grow within this role and shape the way MBDA proves missile equipment both now and for the future.

RF Engineering Internship – 2026 summer placement

Introduction We are seeking a motivated RF & Electronics Summer Placement Student for a full-time placement at our Cambridge office. This role is suited to students who have completed their penultimate year and will be returning for their final year after the summer. The placement offers hands-on experience in RF and electronics for students with a strong grounding in the field.

The placement will last 12 weeks. Successful candidates should be available to start their placement between May and October 2026. There is no deadline for this role, as we recruit on a rolling basis. Once the position is filled, we will close the advert.
