Requirements

  • 7-8+ years of experience in RF/microwave design, preferably in satellite ground terminals or SATCOM systems.
  • Deep understanding of analog and RF circuit design (LNAs, mixers, phase shifters, VCOs, PAs, op-amps, etc.), including noise, linearity, and impedance matching.
  • High proficiency with RF test equipment: signal generators, spectrum analysers, and network Analysers
  • Proficiency in System Vue, ADS, MATLAB or similar simulation/modelling tools
  • Expert in designing RF hardware for Ku, Ka SATCOM applications.
  • Strong knowledge of RF propagation, RF link budgets, and phased array principles.

The opportunity: As RF system lead engineer, you will be the main Data Links technical point of contact for a weapon system project. KDC have a requirement for a Microwave/RF Engineer to support one of our customers within the spacecraft industry.

The role will be supporting the design, development, analysis, and qualification of advanced RF and microwave hardware for spaceborne platforms, including satellites, payloads, deep-space communication systems, and high-reliability flight hardware. This role requires deep technical expertise in high-frequency engineering, space-grade components, and radiation-aware design practices. The engineer will provide technical leadership across the full product lifecycle; from concept and architecture through design, test, integration, and mission support.

The main technical activities include:

RF/Microwave System Leadership

  • Support the architecture of RF and microwave subsystems for space missions, including transponders, LNAs, HPAs, converters, filters, antennas, and phased-array modules.
  • Define RF system-level performance requirements, and payload architecture.
  • Contribute to design reviews, provide technical input direction, and mentor junior RF engineers.

Design & Analysis

  • Design radiation-tolerant and space-qualified RF circuits and assemblies for operation in extreme environments (temperature, vacuum, radiation).
  • Perform advanced electromagnetic simulations (HFSS, CST, ADS, AWR) for components and RF chains.
  • Develop RF/microwave models, S-parameter analysis, noise figure optimization, phase-noise and linearity evaluation, and thermal/structural interaction analysis.

Testing & Qualification

  • Perform RF testing campaigns for engineering models (EM), qualification models (QM), and flight models (FM).
  • Perform space-specific testing such as thermal-vacuum (TVAC), vibration, shock, radiation exposure, and long-duration reliability testing.
  • Use RF laboratory equipment (VNA, spectrum analyser, signal generators, power meters) to validate performance to mission requirements.

Integration & Manufacturing

  • Collaborate with spacecraft systems, mechanical, digital, FPGA/ASIC, mission assurance, and manufacturing teams.
  • Support PCB/layout teams on high-frequency and space-reliability techniques (controlled impedance, grounding, shielding, multipaction mitigation).
  • Support payload integration, end-to-end system verification, and anomaly resolution.

Documentation & Mission Support

  • Develop detailed technical documentation including RF test plans, design reports, analyses, and compliance matrices.
  • Provide expertise during mission readiness reviews and on-orbit commissioning.
  • Ensure compliance with space industry standards (NASA, ESA, MIL-STD, ECSS).

Essential skills and experience

  • Degree or equivalent in Electrical / RF Engineering or similar, or demonstrable relevant experience in lieu thereof.
  • Strong knowledge of RF/microwave theory, S-parameters, Smith charts, transmission line theory, link analysis, and electromagnetic fundamentals.

Purpose Of Role Responsible for the design of RF and Microwave Filter and Sub-systems, ensuring that electrical performance, quality, cost and manufacturability requirements are met.
Summary Of Responsibilities

  • Full responsibility for all aspects of filter and sub-system design, including simulation, prototyping and validation.
  • Contribute to Research and Development into next generation filter solutions.
  • Support of Sales functions during the quotation phases including technical correspondence with customers.
  • The compilation and checking of design documentation, example: design logbooks, data packs, peer review etc. in preparation for design release and production.
  • To deliver fully verified and documented designs in line with project defined technical, schedule and cost constraints.

Role Purpose The RF and Microwave Design Engineer will play a critical role in the design, development, and integration of advanced microwave sensing systems for next-generation healthcare diagnostic and monitoring technologies within the Infection Innovation Technology Laboratory (iiTECH). The postholder will be responsible for developing and optimising microwave and radio-frequency (RF) circuits, antenna design, and sensing architectures that underpin innovative handheld and wearable devices aimed at the detection, monitoring and prevention of infectious diseases.

Working as a part of multidisciplinary research and development team, the appointee will contribute to the full lifecycle of sensor technology innovation from conceptual design, simulation and prototyping to experimental validation and clinical translation. The role will involve close collaboration with electronics engineers, biomedical scientists, applied machine learning engineers and clinicians to ensure the developed systems are robust, accurate, and clinically applicable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, simulate and prototype RF and microwave antennas, circuits for healthcare sensor applications targeting the detection, monitoring, and prevention of infectious diseases
  • Develop antenna resonators optimised for biomedical sensing and material characterisation
  • Use electromagnetic simulation tools namely CST to model, optimise, and validate sensor performance across relevant frequency ranges.
  • Conduct iterative testing, calibration and refinement of designs to ensure sensitivity, stability and reproducibility
  • Collaborate with data scientists and electronics engineers to integrate microwave structures with electronics and AI and ML algorithms for real-time data collection
  • Support the development of data pipelines and algorithms for real-time signal analysis, imaging, and feature extraction from microwave sensor outputs.
  • Evaluate system-level performance, including signal-to-noise ratio, frequency response, and environmental robustness, ensuring compatibility with downstream AI and data processing modules
  • Develop and implement rigorous testing and characterisation protocols to assess microwave sensors reliability, calibration accuracy, and long-term stability.
  • Design and prototype circuitry in alignment with environmental and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing to ensure robust operation under varied physiological and clinical conditions.
  • Document design procedures, test outcomes, and quality assurance measures to support translational deployment
  • Work closely with partners in academia, industry, and global health organisations to align research objectives.
  • Coordinate with clinical teams to ensure technologies address user needs and healthcare priorities.
  • Publish research findings in high-impact academic journals and present at international conferences.

You will have

  • PhD or equivalent industrial experience in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related discipline, with a focus on RF/microwave circuit design or sensing systems.
  • Proven expertise in the design, simulation, and prototyping of RF and microwave circuits, antenna resonators for sensing applications.
  • Proficiency in analogue, digital, and mixed-signal circuit design, including RF front-end development, impedance matching, and high-frequency measurement techniques
  • Experience with electromagnetic and network analysis instrumentation (e.g., VNA, spectrum analysers, signal generators) for circuit testing, calibration, and characterisation
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct experimental validation, iterative prototyping, and performance optimisation of sensing systems.
  • Strong track record of publishing research in peer-reviewed journals or writing industrial reports.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to present findings clearly to diverse audiences

Overview We are seeking a Principal EMC Engineer with specialist knowledge in Military and Aerospace EMC standards (e.g. DEF STAN 59-411, MIL-STD-461, RTCA DO-160) to join our expert team. This is a senior-level position providing technical leadership both internally and externally – from supporting UKAS ISO/IEC 17025 audits and developing procedures, to mentoring engineers and engaging directly with customers.

This role is ideal for someone with deep EMC technical knowledge who is confident in leading complex projects, reviewing and signing technical reports, and shaping the future of testing for defence, aerospace, and other high-integrity sectors.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership across Mil/Aero EMC testing activities, ensuring high-quality execution and compliance.
  • Serve as a report signatory for test reports under ISO/IEC 17025, ensuring accuracy, technical integrity, and traceability.
  • Support and guide engineers in test preparation, execution, and troubleshooting for DEF STAN, MIL-STD-461, DO-160, and related standards.
  • Collaborate with the sales and commercial teams to scope complex projects and provide pre-sales technical support.
  • Engage directly with clients and stakeholders to resolve technical queries and ensure successful project delivery.
  • Develop and maintain internal procedures, test methods, and documentation in line with evolving standards and best practices.
  • Play a key role in audit readiness and compliance for UKAS ISO/IEC 17025 assessments, including non-conformance resolution and continual improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to the training and mentoring of junior engineers and team members.

Skills / Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical, Electronic, or related Engineering discipline, or equivalent industry experience in EMC testing.
  • Extensive experience in EMC testing for Military and Aerospace applications.
  • Strong understanding of DEF STAN 59-411, MIL-STD-461, RTCA DO-160, and similar defence/aerospace EMC standards.
  • Proven experience as a report signatory within an accredited lab.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to guide both internal staff and external customers.
  • Demonstrable experience in developing and maintaining technical procedures and ensuring quality standards.
  • Familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025 audit processes and requirements.
