Job Description The UL Solutions CMIT (Consumer, Medical & Information Technologies) division has an exciting opening available for an EMC Operations Lead in Basingstoke. As a market-leading CoE for EMC & Wireless testing, this is a fantastic opportunity for an aspiring leader or experienced technical leader to oversee a high performing EMC lab team, responsible for EMC testing the latest electronic consumer technology.
A pivotal role within the organisation, you will be responsible for the operational activities and efficiency of our Lab Technicians and Engineers. This includes operational efficiency (pricing, profitability, tasks) of the laboratory and day-to-day people management activities. At times, you may also serve as Project Lead and/or Reviewer on customer test programs.
The ideal person will possess the ability and desire to be a people leader, demonstrating core values of empathy, positivity, a change/growth mindset and being a good role model to those around you. We also want someone who understands how to utilise data to drive operational efficiency and who understands commercials. Technical experience and knowledge of EMC would be highly desirable, but not essential. Your ability to be a strong people leader is more important.
Responsibilities Team Leadership & Resource Management
- Lead, develop, and performance-manage a team of EMC Laboratory Technicians and Engineers (junior to senior level).
- Allocate workload and provide daily direction to ensure efficient execution of testing activities.
- Delegate responsibilities effectively to senior team members to build capability and scalability.
- Set team objectives, provide regular feedback, and manage performance through appraisal processes.
- Identify training needs and deliver/co-ordinate training to ensure capability, capacity, and quality standards.
Operational Excellence & Efficiency
- Analyse laboratory operational data (e.g., scope vs. actual hours, pricing efficiency, margins, utilisation) to drive performance improvements and efficiency.
- Optimise lab and engineering efficiency across people, processes, and task execution.
- Integrate continuous improvement methodologies to enhance productivity and quality.
- Ensure accuracy and maintenance of internal documentation, processes, and quality systems.
Project & Technical Oversight
- Act as Project Lead or Reviewer for EMC test programs across multiple technologies.
- Define project scope, test plans, and ensure accuracy of reports and timely delivery.
- Maintain strong technical understanding of relevant standards, testing technologies, and regulatory requirements.
- Support problem-solving and provide technical guidance for customer products within the lab.
Customer & Stakeholder Management
- Serve as the primary escalation point for customer issues, ensuring timely resolution and high levels of satisfaction.
- Communicate project status, results, and technical information clearly to clients and internal stakeholders.
- Partner with Sales to define project scope, timelines, costs, and sample requirements.
- Engage with key customers to understand needs and support business growth.
- Represent the organisation at industry events, seminars, and technical forums where required.
Commercial & Financial Management
- Own revenue delivery and cost management for the EMC operations function.
- Evaluate cost structures and implement actions to improve profitability and margin performance.
- Support pricing decisions and ensure alignment between operational delivery and commercial objectives.
Governance, Compliance & Culture
- Ensure adherence to test standards, regulatory requirements, and internal quality systems.
- Promote a culture aligned with UL Solutions’ values, including integrity, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Comply with the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and all security policies (physical and digital).
Qualifications
- You will either be an aspiring leader who’s from a technical background (ideally EMC or similar technical environment involving laboratory testing) or an existing leader who has gained some experience leading people, but now wants to do bigger and better things
- In the region of 10 years’ professional experience in related environments / industries
- You should possess a University Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or Physics from an accredited program
- Demonstrates the qualities of a leader – empathy, positivity, a change/growth mindset, being a good role model to those around you
- Excellent communication skills at all levels
- Ability to bring a team together in harmony
- Strong preference for using data. You will understand how to use data to drive operational efficiency, including: scope vs actual work, operational margin, pricing, people and task efficiency
- Good understanding of commercials, including pricing, margins, managing costs to impact revenue etc
This is an onsite role, 5 days per week in Basingstoke.
