As a RF Test and Laboratory Engineer you will join our team in Portsmouth to support our activities within the Space sector.

You will work within a controlled laboratory and cleanroom environment supporting the testing, validation, and fault investigation of RF and microwave assemblies. This role sits between design and production, ensuring high-frequency systems meet strict quality and performance requirements..

Key Responsibilities:

We are seeking a PhD-level RF / High-Speed Electronics Engineer with a strong foundation in applied mathematics, electromagnetic theory, and measurement science.

You will work at the intersection of RF engineering, signal integrity, and electro-optics, developing high-frequency systems that interface closely with advanced photonic components operating at multi-tens of GHz and beyond.

This role is ideal for candidates who think from first principles, are rigorous in experimentation, and are motivated to bridge theory, simulation, and real-world measurements.

What You’ll Do:

  • High-speed circuit design: Contribute to high-speed interconnects and transceiver electronics, including drivers, TIAs, and front-end circuits for modulators and photodetectors
  • 3D EM modelling & simulation: Develop and apply full-wave 3D electromagnetic models of RF structures, interconnects, and packaging (e.g. using HFSS, CST), alongside analytical models (transmission lines, S-parameters, noise, linearity, SI/PI), and correlate predictions with measured data
  • Measurement & characterisation: Design and execute calibrated RF measurements (VNA SOLT/TRL, de-embedding, time- and frequency-domain analysis) using >50 GHz instrumentation
  • Electro-optic integration: Co-design electronic interfaces for integrated photonic switches and transceivers, working closely with photonics and systems teams
  • Prototype bring-up & debugging: Support schematic and PCB reviews, lab debugging, and performance optimisation
  • Data analysis & automation: Use Python or MATLAB for data analysis, modelling, and lab automation

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Antenna & RF Engineer Role Description Summary We are actively seeking an Antenna and RF Engineer to support UK programmes for systems engineering activities. This role will ensure that engineering deliverables are executed and understood to meet contractual requirements, industry standards, and company expectations. The position involves working cross-functionally with multi-functional teams to ensure you help the client design, procure, install, test, commission and maintain a diverse set of satcom terminals at their critical sites across UK projects.

Primary Responsibilities Leads the Antenna and RF engineering outputs for UK programmes:

  • Interfacing with cross-functional matrixed organisations engaged in delivery of the multiple programmes to provide antenna and RF domain experience and knowledge required for UK Programmes.
  • Responsible for managing system engineering deliverables of all antenna and RF projects: requirements capture and analysis, standards and compliance review of design and producing required design documentation.

Qualifications

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

As Laboratory Manager EMC & Radio, You will lead our testing engineering team based in Leatherhead, specialising in EMC and Radio product standards to support our clients across a range of sectors including consumer goods, industrial, medical, energy storage, transportation, and fire detection and alarm systems. The role requires experience of working in a laboratory environment and an understanding of the product testing and certification industry with the ability to manage a team and have solid experience of financial controls.

Key activities:

  • Providing operational management and leadership to a team of up to 8 test engineers providing testing and certification services to customers in EMC and Radio testing.
  • Plan and organise project workload for yourself and your team based upon business priorities and specific project deliverables

  • Lead a series of applied research work-packages and feasibility studies, document and report on their findings, and provide RF architectural recommendations to support the creation of a digital antenna concept for our next generation surveillance radar system
  • Create high quality and robust designs; fully document and record your work products, keep them under configuration management and provide plans and progress reports; and conduct design reviews within the design review framework
  • Supervise junior responsible engineers from within your system or functional block of RF assemblies
  • Ensure design reviews are planned, executed and completed successfully
  • Prepare robust manufacturing data packs and provide technical support to sub-contracts and engineering interface with manufacturing
  • Qualifications first or second degree (BSc, BEng, MEng, MSc, PhD, EngD) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering (preferable) or related science (e.g. Physics)
  • Proven experience (5 years +) in RF circuit design and analysis and a strong understanding of microwave techniques and electromagnetic theory
  • Proficiency in using commercial software tools for RF analysis /simulation and schematic capture such as ADS, AWR, CST

The Role As an EMC Test Engineer, you will play a key role in ensuring the safe and effective test and evaluation of aircraft, land platforms and associated electronic and armament systems operating in complex electromagnetic environments.

Day-to-day, you’ll provide subject matter expertise within multidisciplinary project teams, supporting the planning, execution and assurance of electromagnetic trials across civil and military programmes.

Your Responsibilities Will Include

  • Providing E3 technical expertise in a customer facing and delivery focused environment
  • Understanding customer problems and contributing to innovative engineering solutions
  • Producing test plans, technical reports and presentation material in line with project requirements
  • Identifying E3 technical risks and supporting Project Managers with mitigation

Essential Experience Of The EMC Test Engineer

  • Proven understanding of fundamental electromagnetic theory
  • Have a strong interest and/or experience of Radio Frequency (RF) design and testing
  • Experience across E3 technical areas such as Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) or High‑Intensity Radiated Fields (HIRF)
  • Ability to author technical documentation including test plans and reports

Overview Element have an exciting opportunity in Malvern for a Test Technician/Engineer to join our rapidly expanding team. This position will enable you to become an accomplished engineer proficient in performing a wide range of Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) tests covering an expansive range of products and applications.

Responsibilities This is an opportunity to work with an incredibly diverse range of new and innovative products, and to play an integral role in making tomorrow safer than today. For the right candidate, this could be the first step on the ladder to a rewarding career in product testing, inspection and certification.

As a member of the team, you would perform a vital role that would include;

  • Conduct EMC and Radio Frequency (RF) tests within Anechoic Chambers using a variety of test equipment including, EMI Test Receivers, Spectrum Analysers and Oscilloscopes
  • Performing testing to applicable standards or test plans, whilst accurately documenting the testing process and outcome
  • Understanding customer test plans and how to properly follow laboratory technical procedures and test specifications
  • Setup test equipment and follow written specifications necessary for the accurate performance of the test
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of test standards, product test procedures, and test equipment
  • Interact with customers during the testing process, periodically assist with troubleshooting and improvement modifications

Skills / Qualifications To be successful in your application for this role you will require:

  • A background and / or interest in electronics or engineering
  • Experience of Commercial, Automotive and / or Military EMC Testing would be preferable
