Our Team The IC Team is responsible for the design and test of the integrated circuits which operate at deep-cryogenic temperatures and interact with the qubits. This role is a unique chance to work at the bleeding edge of technology development, developing new innovative circuits to tackle the engineering challenge of implementing a large scale quantum computer in silicon. You will be a key part of a multidisciplinary team, and will be involved in all the aspects of IC design cycle from initial concept to volume production.

As a Senior IC Layout Engineer, the position will suit a multidisciplinary profile with expertise in Analog IC Layout primarily and CAD management secondarily. No quantum experience required, but curiosity and a strong desire to learn and input into a brand-new technology area are critical.

Functions Of The Role

  • Hands-on block-level layout design and verification
  • Parasitic extraction and optimization of layouts in close collaboration with the design team.
  • Top-level floor-planning, routing and signoff
  • Provide tool/flow support for analogue and layout design teams
  • Document own work and perform layout reviews with other team members

Experience – Essentials

  • Industry degree qualification and at least 5 years of experience in Analog IC Layout in the Cadence environment
  • Proficiency in Cadence Virtuoso Layout Suite (X)L including PCell Designer
  • Proficiency in DRC, LVS, & Parasitic Extraction with Mentor Calibre or Cadence PVS/QRC
  • Demonstrated experience in deep sub-micron processes
  • Team player with a collaborative mindset
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Experience – Desirable

  • Experience with 40nm processes and below, including familiarity with layout-dependent effects (LOD, WPE, OSE, etc.)
  • Solid understanding of the Linux OS

You will work at the intersection of RF engineering, signal integrity, and electro-optics, developing high-frequency systems that interface closely with advanced photonic components operating at multi-tens of GHz and beyond.

This role is ideal for candidates who think from first principles, are rigorous in experimentation, and are motivated to bridge theory, simulation, and real-world measurements.

  • High-speed circuit design: Contribute to high-speed interconnects and transceiver electronics, including drivers, TIAs, and front-end circuits for modulators and photodetectors
  • 3D EM modelling & simulation: Develop and apply full-wave 3D electromagnetic models of RF structures, interconnects, and packaging (e.g. using HFSS, CST), alongside analytical models (transmission lines, S-parameters, noise, linearity, SI/PI), and correlate predictions with measured data
  • Measurement & characterisation: Design and execute calibrated RF measurements (VNA SOLT/TRL, de-embedding, time- and frequency-domain analysis) using >50 GHz instrumentation
  • Electro-optic integration: Co-design electronic interfaces for integrated photonic switches and transceivers, working closely with photonics and systems teams
  • Prototype bring-up & debugging: Support schematic and PCB reviews, lab debugging, and performance optimisation

Come and join our expanding Electronic Warfare Operations Support Group (EWOS) which is made up of 60+ electronic warfare specialists. From all manner of backgrounds, our engineers, scientists, and ex-military personnel combine their experience to help our customers achieve the true operational potential and help keep their people and platforms safe.

We are continuing to grow our team at Porton Down, Salisbury, working on key state-of-the-art research, development, and delivery projects, led by our technical customer, Dstl.

The primary role is to support test and development of RF Receiver hardware in various environments including laboratory, ground-based field trials, airborne trials and synthetic environment testing. This will require using a range of different RF equipment to cover direct inject testing, free-space testing and chamber testing, including field trials of RF receiver equipment in the UK and abroad.

The role will require technical autonomy, liaising with military stakeholders, academia, industry and international partners, to assess the performance of receiver hardware, developing improvements, and providing advice.

A secondary focus will be on implementation and testing of real-time algorithms deployed to Radio Frequency System on Chip (RFSoC) boards, within a larger laboratory setup.

Additionally, the role will enable you to design said algorithms, working with various technical stakeholders to derive and capture requirements, ensuring constraints and limitations are understood prior to deployment.

Given the scale of the main project this role will work on, there are opportunities to work on all stages of the engineering lifecycle, including trials support both in the UK and internationally. You will have the prospect to develop into a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on RF Sensing and Electronics and their use in modern EW applications.

Algorithm deployment will also involve an assessment of where on the RFSoC board certain computations should be performed (Application Processing Units, FPGA, or off-board distributed computing), with the role allowing for specialism and knowledge to be gained in these areas.

Working autonomously with unprecedented access to the customer, you will be crucial to ensure the success of these key projects, all whilst being supported by our on-site and home-site MASS teams.

  • Understanding of RF sensor systems and Test & Evaluation (T&E) practices.

Our team of EMC focused Technicians or Engineers deliver a comprehensive EMC testing service for new and innovative technology and devices from a wide range of industries. The Engineer will take ownership of the set up and completion of EMC test projects and the accurate delivery of results to customers.

Initial training will be delivered on a shift pattern of Monday-Friday, 37 hours per hour, 8:30am-5:00pm before transferring to the shift rotation after training. The successful candidate will rotate between the shift pattern below every two to three weeks.

  • Shift 1: Monday to Thursday: 8am – 4:30pm with a 1-hour lunch break. Friday: 8am – 4pm with a 1-hour lunch break
  • Shift 2: Monday to Thursday: 4pm – 12:30am with a 1 hour break. Friday: 4pm – 12am with a 1-hour break.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

  • Work closely with customers, Engineers and Project Managers to provide EMC testing in both screened enclosure and in-situ environments.
  • Provide support to customers in advance of, or during, the test programme, particularly communicating issues during any failure phase of their EMC test programme.
  • Maintain data and electronic logbooks for testing
  • Test procedure generation including provision of photos and measurement uncertainty calculations.
  • Develop test plans (where required) and generate test reports.
  • Contribute to test equipment / method development and evaluation.
  • Support the validation of clients’ requirements (which may require site visits).
  • Offer assistance to the sales team with the provision of technical information to enable quote generation.
  • Develop as specialist in a specific area of testing i.e. rail, marine, radio EMC requirements, etc.
  • Provision of training to engineers regarding specialist area.

Essential Criteria

  • Experience as an EMC Test Engineer in a test house environment with demonstrable knowledge and understanding of the EMC Directive and/or relevant EMC test standards.
  • Experience of using test equipment such as a spectrum/network analyser, oscilloscope, signal generator or RF power meter.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills – this role involves direct customer communication and therefore a good level of English fluency is required.
  • Self-driven with an enthusiastic approach and willingness to learn/develop technical skills.
  • Willing to work overtime and shiftwork as and when required
  • Computer literate with good IT skills, particularly using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and bespoke test systems.

The Opportunity The Integration and Missile Validation department is looking for a talented engineer to join our mission to achieve the Certificate of Design for a new UK Weapon System. You will be instrumental in demonstrating that the SPEAR 3 Weapon is fit-for-purpose and operates flawlessly even in the most extreme electromagnetic environments. SPEAR 3 is an important Weapon System programme advancing through the first customer capability requirement and also on to new variants for additional UK and export platforms.

Reporting to the Ground Trials Proving Lead, you will be responsible for planning, conducting and reporting on trials across the full design lifecycle, including product de-risk, demonstration and qualification. You will:

  • Design trials: Design functional test setups and specify the necessary instrumentation and stimuli to accurately capture data during trials.
  • Prepare for trial: Lead or support trials readiness reviews, ensuring all test hardware, software, and facilities are prepared and all aspects, including safety, are assessed and documented.
  • Coordinate: Manage and coordinate all aspects of the Weapon subsystem or system under test, securing timely availability and logistics of all hardware, software and test equipment required.
  • Execute tests: Be hands-on in supporting the physical test setup and work-up of formal Qualification and investigations within in specialised facilities, such as EMC anechoic and reverberation chambers.
  • Record comprehensively: Produce accurate logs of all proving activities, raising issues in a timely and detailed way.
  • Analyse data: Record and meticulously analyse trial data to support the verification that the system meets its stringent requirements.
  • Report findings: Author comprehensive trial conduct reports to support the product’s development and certification.
  • Support certification: Provide critical data and reports to support the formal certification of our products for use.
  • Interface: Act as the primary engineering interface between the project team and the test facilities, with deep knowledge of how the product operates in the full range of intended RF environments.
  • Communicate: Ensuring seamless coordination and information flow throughout the trial.
  • Develop Capability: Within the IMV department, there will be opportunities for passionate individuals to support and lead the development of specialist EMC proving capability, developing competencies and driving results.

This role will reward individuals who enjoy hand-on testing of products in physical environments, such as vulnerabilities to and emissions of RF and electrical energy.

The role is predominantly based on site, especially whilst running trials campaigns using MBDA’s industry-leading EMC facilities in Bristol, with occasional travel required when using external test houses. This role could be based at Bristol with some travel to Stevenage for some of the work up and planning.

Much of our current work is centred on the G1X radar, which is the newest radar in Saab’s portfolio – a software defined radar with a regular capability update cycle post-delivery, as well as an established production line. As an Inspection & Test Technician you will work in the Production department as part of the Test & Inspection team. Duties will be (but not limited to) inspecting produced items and units and testing units and the G1X Radar. Whilst the role is based in Fareham there may be opportunities for trips to Sweden for training and knowledge transfer.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Support Inspection & Test Team Leader by being proactive to achieve production goals
  • Ensure any soldering and electrical looming is carried out to a high standard in line with company standards and procedures. Test functionality of produced units and sub-assemblies
  • Help and support others with training when possible, by passing on knowledge and skills.
  • Understand and interpret electrical drawings.
  • Follow documented processes and record results
  • Carry out any other duties as detailed by the team leader or Production Supervisor. Maintain personal ability in, and appropriate use of, all relevant IT (Information & Technology) and other systems required to adequately perform the role.
  • Act ethically, with integrity and in the best interest of the business at all times
  • Maintain a professional and supportive relationship with team members and other departments in order to deliver business and delivery objectives or deadlines.
  • Test radar systems, including conducting thorough inspections and performance evaluations to ensure they meet required specifications.

  • Liaise with Swedish colleagues over Teams, email, or in person to collaborate on projects, share knowledge, and ensure effective communication and coordination across teams.
