Job Description Leonardo UK has an exciting opportunity for a Principal EMC Engineer to join our established EMC Test Team at our dedicated UKAS accredited EMC Test facility in Basildon. This site-based role will undertake EMC testing, specification, design and development work on various Air / Land and Sea projects at system and component level.

What You’ll be doing

Perform functional testing, tuning and diagnostics of RF products, as well as diagnostics at component level for both prime products and repairs. You’ll also be required to keep accurate test records, carry out any maintenance tasks and aid other disciplines to improve overall cost and quality of product.

Main Duties:

  • Perform functional testing of electronic assemblies to required contractual, quality and schedule requirements
  • Diagnose boards/units down to component level on failing products and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
  • Diagnose test equipment related faults
  • Execution of preventative maintenance and calibration plans for test equipment
  • Record accurate test records and provide requested yield & failure reports
  • Assist engineering with any ongoing investigations / initiatives

  • Minimum of HND in electronics or relevant experience
  • Must have significant experience with testing and diagnostics of RF (>1GHz) products down to component level

CRFS is seeking a skilled RF & Wideband Antenna Lead to lead the design, simulation, and validation of advanced RF front-ends. This role bridges the gap between electromagnetic design and system-level hardware integration. You will be responsible for the entire physical layer of our RF platforms—from the antenna element through the filters, amplifiers, and matching networks—ensuring high-performance sensing and communication in complex environments.

Key Responsibilities

RF Front-End & Antenna Design:

  • Design and optimize wideband antennas and integrated RF front-ends for high-sensitivity sensing applications.
  • Model complete RF chains using CST Studio Suite, ADS, or Microwave Office, accounting for housing effects, PCBs, and co-site interference.

Profile/Skills

Essential

  • Minimum 15 years of experience in EMC matters with a strong focus on rail/high-speed rail or transportation sectors.
  • Extensive, proven experience as an EMC engineer or specialist within a complex, large-scale infrastructure project.
  • Deep technical knowledge of railway EMC and the governing standards, particularly the EN 50121 series (Railway applications – Electromagnetic compatibility).
  • Experience of the production and review of the following documents:-

Role Overview

Working on-site from our R&D offices in Rickmansworth, this hands-on role is focused on supporting the RF Design team with new developments, primarily through testing, tuning, reworking, and modifying RF PCBs and assemblies. The responsibilities include maintaining the stock of components and consumables, assisting with test equipment calibration arrangements, and organising the RF laboratory.

Our ideal candidate will have previous experience in the construction and testing of RF circuits or similar devices. The ability to read schematic and PCB layout diagrams accurately is essential, as is the ability to follow test procedures and document results meticulously. Proficiency in using RF/Electronic test equipment, such as VNAs, Spectrum Analysers, Signal Generators, Power Meters, Oscilloscopes, and DVMs/DMMs, is required. Additionally, the candidate should have experience in writing and editing Python and LabVIEW scripts to control test equipment and run automated testing. While some experience with mechanical modification is a plus, it is not essential.

Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) or similar software is necessary.
