Job Description We are excited to be recruiting for an experience Engineer with microwave engineering knowledge, familiar with working on complex electronic (ideally RF-based) sensor systems.

The role can be based in either Southampton or Bristol and will focus on the electronics design of the RF and control subsystems; to be implemented on laboratory and aircraft concept demonstrators.

You will provide technical support throughout the product lifecycle including design implementation, integration and test, system trials and product delivery.

You will be part of the Leonardo Airborne Communications product development group within the Integrated Sensing & Protection line of business; interacting with partner organisations / sub-contractors and potential customers.

Your Impact

  • You will be responsible for delivery of work packages focused on analogue and RF electronics, covering the inter vehicle data link design, system test and integration.
  • Modelling of proposed architectures to determine the optimal solution.
  • Simulation of RF design.
  • Documentation of design including configuration management within Teamcenter.
  • Support laboratory hardware demonstrator development and test.

What We Are Looking For These are some of the key things we are looking for, although it’s not necessary to have experience in everything

  • Practical hands on experience of RF design of circuitry, ideally between DC and 30 GHz, but if you don’t have experience over this whole range then we’d still be interested to hear from you.
  • Experience of working with PCB layout personnel in an advisory capacity.
  • Hands on experience of using RF test and measurement equipment to develop and debug RF circuitry.
  • Ability to use RF and system modelling and simulation tools.
  • Ability to produce concise technical reports detailing design solutions and implementation.
  • Ability to understand and follow the business practices, such as design reviews, which come with working in a high technology defence environment.
  • Degree in relevant engineering or related scientific discipline (Electronics Engineering preferred).
  • As part of an electromechanical project, be willing to work closely with the mechanical team members to create a solution which addresses all design requirements.

It would be nice if you had

  • Knowledge / experience of digital or mixed signal design.
  • Experience in system level and sub-system integration and debug.
  • Experience of working in the defence electronics sector.
  • Chartered Engineer status, or a member of a professional engineering institution.

Antenna & RF Engineer Role Description Summary We are actively seeking an Antenna and RF Engineer to support UK programmes for systems engineering activities. This role will ensure that engineering deliverables are executed and understood to meet contractual requirements, industry standards, and company expectations. The position involves working cross-functionally with multi-functional teams to ensure you help the client design, procure, install, test, commission and maintain a diverse set of satcom terminals at their critical sites across UK projects.

Primary Responsibilities Leads the Antenna and RF engineering outputs for UK programmes:

  • Interfacing with cross-functional matrixed organisations engaged in delivery of the multiple programmes to provide antenna and RF domain experience and knowledge required for UK Programmes.
  • Responsible for managing system engineering deliverables of all antenna and RF projects: requirements capture and analysis, standards and compliance review of design and producing required design documentation.
  • Analyzing requirements and designs to develop successful action plans.
  • Manage technical response and technical compliance for designs, including internal commercial approvals.
  • Liaise between SES vendor management teams and vendors to manage technical compliance and meet customer deliverables.
  • Collaborates with UK programmes internal and external teams to achieve performance and conformance within the UK programmes area.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Technical or related field.
  • 7 years of experience in engineering, defence, and SATCOM.
  • Knowledge of ground station equipment to include up and down converters, power amplifiers, receivers, and other antenna elements; low-voltage power distribution, backup battery, generator systems, and international electrical standards.
  • In-depth knowledge of Systems Engineering on large and/or complex engineering projects.
  • Experience with defence contracts, governance, and transition projects.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with Service Delivery, Service Operations, Engineering, and Operations teams.
  • Valid UK Security Clearance required.

Preferable competencies

  • Experience with ISO standards, DEFCONs, DEFSTANs and JSPs.

  • The ideal candidate is detail‑oriented, technically curious, and comfortable working both independently and with guidance as needed.

The ideal candidate will have 5+ years’ experience in in-building radio survey, design, installation and commissioning across passive and active DAS, radiating cable, analogue/digital RFoF systems, and multi-technology base station designs. Strong skills in link budget analysis, industry-standard design tools, prediction software and CW survey techniques are essential. Experience supporting technical bids is desirable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver single and multi-operator JOT design submissions, owning technical specifications and ensuring on-time delivery.
  • Troubleshoot in-building systems (RFoF, Small Cell, C-RAN) remotely and on-site.

Role Purpose
The RF and Microwave Design Engineer will play a critical role in the design, development, and integration of advanced microwave sensing systems for next-generation healthcare diagnostic and monitoring technologies within the Infection Innovation Technology Laboratory (iiTECH). The postholder will be responsible for developing and optimising microwave and radio-frequency (RF) circuits, antenna design, and sensing architectures that underpin innovative handheld and wearable devices aimed at the detection, monitoring and prevention of infectious diseases.

Working as a part of multidisciplinary research and development team, the appointee will contribute to the full lifecycle of sensor technology innovation from conceptual design, simulation and prototyping to experimental validation and clinical translation. The role will involve close collaboration with electronics engineers, biomedical scientists, applied machine learning engineers and clinicians to ensure the developed systems are robust, accurate, and clinically applicable.

Key responsibilities include design and characterisation of RF/microwave circuits, antennas design, development of microwave-based sensing and imaging modalities, integration with digital and embedded systems, and implementation of rigorous quality assurance and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, simulate and prototype RF and microwave antennas, circuits for healthcare sensor applications targeting the detection, monitoring, and prevention of infectious diseases
  • Develop antenna resonators optimised for biomedical sensing and material characterisation
  • Use electromagnetic simulation tools namely CST to model, optimise, and validate sensor performance across relevant frequency ranges.

You will have

  • PhD or equivalent industrial experience in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related discipline, with a focus on RF/microwave circuit design or sensing systems.
  • Proven expertise in the design, simulation, and prototyping of RF and microwave circuits, antenna resonators for sensing applications.
  • Proficiency in analogue, digital, and mixed-signal circuit design, including RF front-end development, impedance matching, and high-frequency measurement techniques
