Salary: Circa £50,000+ depending on experience

The Opportunity

The Integration and Missile Validation department is looking for a talented engineer to join our mission to achieve the Certificate of Design for a new UK Weapon System. You will be instrumental in demonstrating that the SPEAR 3 Weapon is fit-for-purpose and operates flawlessly even in the most extreme electromagnetic environments. SPEAR 3 is an important Weapon System programme advancing through the first customer capability requirement and also on to new variants for additional UK and export platforms.

Reporting to the Ground Trials Proving Lead, you will be responsible for planning, conducting and reporting on trials across the full design lifecycle, including product de-risk, demonstration and qualification. You will:

  • Design trials: Design functional test setups and specify the necessary instrumentation and stimuli to accurately capture data during trials.
  • Prepare for trial: Lead or support trials readiness reviews, ensuring all test hardware, software, and facilities are prepared and all aspects, including safety, are assessed and documented.
  • Coordinate: Manage and coordinate all aspects of the Weapon subsystem or system under test, securing timely availability and logistics of all hardware, software and test equipment required.
  • Execute tests: Be hands-on in supporting the physical test setup and work-up of formal Qualification and investigations within in specialised facilities, such as EMC anechoic and reverberation chambers.
  • Record comprehensively: Produce accurate logs of all proving activities, raising issues in a timely and detailed way.
  • Analyse data: Record and meticulously analyse trial data to support the verification that the system meets its stringent requirements.
  • Report findings: Author comprehensive trial conduct reports to support the product’s development and certification.
  • Support certification: Provide critical data and reports to support the formal certification of our products for use.
  • Interface: Act as the primary engineering interface between the project team and the test facilities, with deep knowledge of how the product operates in the full range of intended RF environments.
  • Communicate: Ensuring seamless coordination and information flow throughout the trial.
  • Develop Capability: Within the IMV department, there will be opportunities for passionate individuals to support and lead the development of specialist EMC proving capability, developing competencies and driving results.

This role will reward individuals who enjoy hand-on testing of products in physical environments, such as vulnerabilities to and emissions of RF and electrical energy.

The role is predominantly based on site, especially whilst running trials campaigns using MBDA’s industry-leading EMC facilities in Bristol, with occasional travel required when using external test houses. This role could be based at Bristol with some travel to Stevenage for some of the work up and planning.

Proving our products in the EMC environments is a key competency that the IMV department is keen to develop and elevate as a specialism. This presents an opportunity to grow within this role and shape the way MBDA proves missile equipment both now and for the future.

A Certification that is essential if our customers want to be able to sell their products to global markets. The team is now seeking a Laboratory Engineer to support testing activities in the lab. Laboratory Engineers are primarily undertaking the testing, working with defined test plans and operating complex laboratory equipment. This role contributes to project execution, customer communication, and continuous improvement efforts within the laboratory environment.

Responsibilities

  • Follows complex defined test plans and datasheets with necessary supervision /support.
  • Evaluates test performance and sample operation to properly evaluate test results.
  • Records and explains test results and completes test report.
  • Serves as Project Lead for simple test programs as assigned with the necessary assistance.
  • Communicates project status and results as needed.
  • Holds responsibility for defining test plan, report completion and accuracy, meeting of agreed deadlines, and managing project related activities.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelors Degree in a relevant subject + 3 years’ experience in a similar environment, with hands-on testing experience with RF technologies
  • Aware of compliance test standards for FCC (Federal Communications Commission)
  • Familiar with testing licensed and un-licensed technologies e.g. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Cellular
  • The ideal candidate is detail‑oriented, technically curious, and comfortable working both independently and with guidance as needed.
  • Open to working shift patterns if needed (including weekends)
  • Hands-on experience with Spectrum Analysers, receivers and simulators
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining high quality and exceptional customer service.

Can you design, build and test Antennas for modern communication systems?

Are you keen to build your skills and develop your career in engineering?

You’ll bring your technical knowledge and ideas to create and maintain antennas to solve a range of challenging engineering problems, to meet the needs of partners at home and overseas.

On the job training is provided, and a portion of your time will be dedicated to innovation and research.

Joining one of our product enabling teams, you’ll work on hardware products and solutions to protect national security. You may not know all the details yet, but you soon will.

No two days will be the same, one day you could be modifying an existing design to introduce a new requirement, the next you could be collaborating with a multidiscipline team on designing the next set of products and systems.

More about you

To apply for this role, you will already have:

  • Experience of designing and testing bespoke antennas to meet specifications and standards.
  • Experience of using network and spectrum analysers plus other test equipment and measurement systems used in antenna design.
  • Experience of antenna construction and good skills with hand tools.

It would be beneficial if you also have one or more of the following (although these are not essential):

  • Relevant experience or relevant Degree, such as RF engineering, RF communications, electronic engineering, engineering, maths or physics.
  • An interest in design and implementation of antennas.
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary engineering team to deliver solutions to engineering problems.
  • The ability to work independently with some supervision to solve antenna related problems.

This site-based role will undertake EMC testing, specification, design and development work on various Air / Land and Sea projects at system and component level.

Your impact

Working alongside the Lab Manager, you will provide UKAS accredited EMC testing along with design and development support to projects; this includes the development of EMC test procedures, plans and requirements which provide robust cost-effective solutions to our customers.

Customer and supplier liaison is also key, ensuring the minimisation of through life EMC cost while offering an innovative and robust solution to our customers’ needs.

The production of EMC documentation for projects will be necessary along with approving suppliers’ documentation and test results. EMC testing forms a major part of the role, both in house and at external EMC test houses. The successful applicant will also be key in supporting the Basildon EMC facility UKAS audit schedule and accreditation. Other duties include EMC test house and equipment maintenance duties.

Key Responsibility Areas:

  • In house and external EMC testing to military, aviation, and commercial standards.
  • Design for EMC.
  • Development of EMC requirements from legislation and top-level system specifications.
  • Production of EMC Plans for complex systems and components.

About You

Experience of UKAS audits and looking after the day to day running and capability enhancement and maintenance of an EMC test facility is essential.

Expertise in:

  • EMC testing to standards (military, aviation and commercial).
  • EMC requirement generation from standards and legislation.
  • Customer EMC requirements analysis.
  • System level EMC design, development, and solution provision.
  • EMC Component selection.

Knowledge of TEMPEST test specifications, test procedures, and test set up is also highly desirable, however suitable candidates can look forward to TEMPEST training should they require this.

The Role

As an E3 Senior Engineer, you will play a key role in ensuring the safe and effective test and evaluation of aircraft, land platforms and associated electronic and armament systems operating in complex electromagnetic environments.

Day-to-day, you’ll provide subject matter expertise within multidisciplinary project teams, supporting the planning, execution and assurance of electromagnetic trials across civil and military programmes.

Your responsibilities will include:
Providing E3 technical expertise in a customer facing and delivery focused environment
Understanding customer problems and contributing to innovative engineering solutions
Producing test plans, technical reports and presentation material in line with project requirements
Identifying E3 technical risks and supporting Project Managers with mitigation
Supporting the planning and delivery of electromagnetic trials programmes
Maintaining continued technical engagement with key internal and external stakeholders

Essential experience of the E3 Senior Engineer:
Proven understanding of fundamental electromagnetic theory
Experience across E3 technical areas such as Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) or High‑Intensity Radiated Fields (HIRF)
Ability to author technical documentation including test plans and reports
Experience working within technical governance frameworks
Strong written and verbal communication with internal and external stakeholders
Confidence to stand behind engineering judgement and challenge constructively

Essential qualifications for the Senior Engineer:
Degree or equivalent experience in Electrical or Electronic Engineering or Physics
Evidence of continued professional learning and development
