Job Description

As an RF test Engineer (Space) you will join our team in Portsmouth to support our activities within the Aerospace sector.

You will be responsible for performing RF and low voltage DC testing on satellite systems, ensuring designs meet strict technical, safety, and performance requirements. The role involves working on-site across AM/PM shifts, collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams, and supporting EMC testing and validation activities.

Key Responsibilities:

This role requires an experienced EMC engineer who is looking for an exciting and varied role that includes the challenge of ensuring Renishaw’s products remain compliant with global EMC requirements.

The role reports to the EMC Lab Manager and requires the role holder to maintain and develop their EMC knowledge as a subject matter expert, providing guidance on EMC matters to product development teams for Renishaw’s products.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage testing including operation of test equipment and ensuring calibration in accordance with Regulatory Standards and Renishaw’s quality management system.
  • Conduct emissions and immunity testing in accordance with applicable requirements and to train others to do this where needed.
  • Maintain knowledge of technical requirements and assist the EMC Lab Manager in providing technical leadership for the EMC lab and the company.
  • Support Renishaw’s design teams during product development phases, providing EMC design guidance, helping identify causes of noncompliance and proposing implementable, practical and efficient solutions.

  • Create client deliverables in the form of test reports, and certification reports.
  • Assist the Lab Manager with routine lab operation, maintenance, calibration, qualification, and troubleshooting of EMC laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Support the EMC Lab Manager in managing operations within the EMC development testing lab.
  • Assist the EMC Lab Manager to develop, draft, review, and validate test methods, laboratory procedures, and other department-level operating procedures and quality documents.
  • Take part in investigation of, response to, and follow-up of customer inquiries and complaints.
  • Control of test samples including their logging, pre-treatment, preparation, testing, and other associated tasks.
  • Conduct multiple projects within tight deadlines.
  • Collaborate and interface with clients, taking and acting on feedback.

Key requirements

  • Ideally educated to HND level or higher in an Engineering related discipline
  • Deep understanding and experience in EMC testing
  • Awareness and understanding of current best practice in testing and reporting against EN/IEC/FCC/ICES/ANSI and other standards, including those relating to at least one of the following: Machinery, Medical Devices, Household Appliances products and ITE.
  • Experience of Radio testing would be desirable but is not essential.
  • An interest, or previous experience in implementing or adopting new technologies to enable EMC testing and reporting outputs to be efficiently delivered is highly desirable.

As we move from core technology development toward customer qualification and productisation, system-level architectural clarity has become critical. The position requires a system-level understanding of the principles of satellite RF communications including Ku-Band and Ka plus familiarity with the following equipment is desirable: LEO tracking antennas, Antenna Control Units (ACU)s, transmitters, antennas, antenna controls, motors, resolvers, LNAs, encoders, 3-phase power, signal routing, fiber optics. The position also requires basic knowledge of network communications. The candidate will need the ability to read schematic, technical documents and wiring diagrams.

What You’ll Do:

• Lead a team of field engineers and provide technical oversight, and scheduling of field resources to support and sustain a global network of LEO teleports

• Test, troubleshooting, commissioning and continuing support of Satellite Network Portals (SNP) build out and operation.

• Support of installation, commissioning, and integration with OneWeb Partners

• Knowledge of rack integration, cable fabrication, cable terminations and interconnect wiring diagrams

• Optimizing earth station antennas performing antenna patterns, G/T, and overall functionality

• Ability to configure and test IP based network equipment and peripherals.

• Minimum 3 years of prior related experience in a lead or supervisory role with a focus on Antennas. Experience with LEO tracking antennas a bonus.

In this key leadership role, you’ll oversee all RF testing activities across multiple space programmes, including RF preparation tasks for telecoms payloads testing and ensuring that test systems solutions are developed on time, on cost & on quality (including Product Regulatory Compliance, where appropriate). You’ll lead a team of skilled engineers, driving operational performance, technical excellence and continuous improvement in one of Europe’s most advanced RF test environments.

You’ll define the vision and strategy for RF test, ensuring safe, efficient and on-time delivery of complex test campaigns. Working closely with Engineering, Quality and Programme teams you’ll play a pivotal role in ensuring that our spacecraft meet the highest standards of performance and reliability.

About You

We’re looking for a proactive and collaborative leader who combines deep technical knowledge with strong people and operational management skills:

  • Experience in RF testing within aerospace, defence or high-reliability communication systems
  • Proven ability to lead technical teams and manage complex operational environments
  • Understanding of RF test principles, measurement systems and payload performance validation
  • Excellent communication, leadership and stakeholder management skills
  • Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical, Electronic or Communications Engineering
  • Experience of regulatory compliance requirements

Salary: £45,000 – £60,000
Due to growing demand in radio approvals, we are seeking an experienced Lead RF Compliance Engineer to join our team.
Responsibilities
  • RF and EMC Testing: Perform RF/EMC compliance tests, analyze results, and generate reports.
  • Test Development: Create test plans, quotes, and procedures based on international RF/EMC standards.
  • Equipment Management: Calibrate and maintain RF/EMC testing equipment.
  • Team Supervision: Oversee daily testing operations, guide engineers, and support team development.
  • Customer Interaction: Address inquiries and ensure clear communication of decisions.
  • Process Improvement: Suggest and implement laboratory system enhancements.
  • Compliance and Standards: Ensure adherence to ISO17025 and relevant regulations.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Strong engineering knowledge (mechanics, physics, electronics at A-level/HNC or higher).
  • Practical experience in RF/EMC compliance testing and equipment (e.g., spectrum analyzers, network analyzers).
  • Familiarity with RF testing methods and standards (e.g., FCC Pt 15/90, EN300328).
  • Understanding of the Radio Equipment Directive (RED).
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Experience in a UKAS-accredited lab and proficiency in Python (or similar) is a plus.
