Job Title: RF Designer

Salary: Circa £65,000 depending on experience

Location: Stevenage (We may be able to offer a relocation package for this role)

Dynamic (hybrid) working: Where possible, we will seek to accommodate a blended approach to on-site and remote working – such as being onsite when necessary to work with people and collaborate, then working from home and around family commitments to be your most efficient. Typically for this role you will work 3-4 days per week on-site due to workload classification. In addition, this role could be full time or part time in order to meet your needs. We are flexible and accommodating.

The opportunity:

We’re looking for an RF Design engineer with proven practical design experience for cutting edge defence products. You’ll be working on the research, design and testing of cutting-edge radio-frequency technology for integration into our complex weapons systems, with a focus on utilising your hands on experience to carry out modifications or rapid prototypes where required.

We need a team player who can use their initiative and has a real passion for electronic engineering. The role would ideally suit someone who is comfortable carrying out hands on testing and modifications to boards while having a strong background in RF design.

What we’re looking for from you:

  • Proven practical RF (component level) design and testing of RF circuits across a wide frequency range ( eg, 30MHz to 30GHz, including LNA Amplifier, High Power Amplifier, filter, local oscillator, synthesiser, modulator design etc)
  • RF design experience for harsh environments (EMC, vibration, thermal)
  • Ability to perform design proving tests and trials in the onsite laboratory
  • Excellent practical skills including soldering, fault finding and the use of RF test equipment including Spectrum Analysers, Power Meters & VNAs
  • Good knowledge of digital, analogue and power supply design
  • Experience using RF design tools ( eg Microwave Office), including layout.
  • Fully conversant with manufacturing techniques and capabilities, including design for manufacture and test.
  • Strong communicator with excellent presentation and report writing skills and the ability to communicate clearly any problems, solutions or results to the team and customer.

  • The Antenna Systems Engineer is responsible for the design, development, integration, and validation of vehicle antenna systems supporting connectivity, infotainment, telematics, ADAS, and V2X functions.

Key Responsibilities:

Antenna System Architecture & Design:

  • Define vehicle antenna system architecture for AM/FM/DAB, GNSS, LTE/5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, V2X, satellite radio, and keyless entry.
  • Support antenna type selection (glass-embedded, shark-fin, roof, bumper, distributed antennas).
  • Collaborate with vehicle architecture, body, and styling teams to balance RF performance and design constraints.

RF Performance & Simulation:

  • Perform RF simulations and modelling (e.g., EM solvers) to predict antenna performance.
  • Define performance targets such as gain, efficiency, isolation, radiation patterns, and diversity/MIMO performance.
  • Support antenna tuning and optimization at component and vehicle level.

Vehicle Integration:

  • Lead integration of antenna systems into vehicle platforms, including grounding, cabling, connectors, and placement.
  • Ensure coexistence and electromagnetic compatibility among multiple RF systems.
  • Support integration of antennas with modules such as TCU, IVI, ADAS ECUs, and keyless systems.

Validation & Testing:

  • Define and execute antenna and RF DV/PV plans at component and vehicle level.
  • Support anechoic chamber, drive testing, OTA testing, and regulatory certification.
  • Lead root-cause analysis and resolution of RF performance issues.

Supplier & Partner Management:

  • Manage Tier-1 and Tier-2 antenna and RF suppliers.
  • Define technical specifications, review designs, and support DFMEA/PFMEA activities.
  • Ensure supplier solutions meet OEM targets for performance, cost, quality, and timing.

Program Execution & Launch:

  • Support vehicle program milestones from concept through SOP.
  • Manage engineering changes and issue resolution during builds and launch.
  • Support manufacturing, service, and aftersales documentation.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, Communications, or related field.
  • 3-10+ years of experience in automotive antenna systems, RF engineering, or wireless systems (level dependent).
  • Strong understanding of RF fundamentals and automotive antenna integration.
  • Experience working within OEM or Tier-1 automotive development processes.

Technical Skills:

  • Antenna systems for automotive applications (AM/FM, GNSS, cellular, V2X, etc.).

Can you design, build and test Antennas for modern communication systems? Do you want to develop your career in engineering while protecting national security?

You’ll bring your technical knowledge and ideas to create and maintain antennas that solve challenging engineering problems for partners at home and overseas. On the job training is provided, and a portion of your time will be dedicated to innovation and research.

Joining one of our product enabling teams, you’ll work on hardware products and solutions that are critical to the success of our mission. You may not know all the details yet, but you soon will.

No two days will be the same: one day you could be modifying an existing design to introduce a new requirement; the next you could be collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to design the next set of products and systems.


More about you

To apply for this role, you will already have:

  • Experience of designing and testing bespoke antennas to meet specifications and standards.
  • Experience of using network and spectrum analysers plus other test equipment and measurement systems used in antenna design.
  • Experience of antenna construction and good skills with hand tools.

It would be beneficial if you also have one or more of the following (although these are not essential):

  • Relevant experience or relevant degree, such as RF engineering, RF communications, electronic engineering, engineering, maths or physics.
  • An interest in design and implementation of antennas.
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary engineering team to deliver solutions to engineering problems.
  • The ability to work independently with some supervision to solve antenna related problems.
  • Experience of RF design using software simulation tools, e.g. HFSS, CST etc.

Role Overview

Working on-site from our R&D offices in Rickmansworth, this hands-on role is focused on supporting the RF Design team with new developments, primarily through testing, tuning, reworking, and modifying RF PCBs and assemblies. The responsibilities include maintaining the stock of components and consumables, assisting with test equipment calibration arrangements, and organising the RF laboratory. The role involves various support tasks within the RF engineering team, including building and testing boards, modules, and chassis.

Key Accountabilities

  • Support the RF team with maintaining the lab area.
  • Organising storage of development hardware.
  • Arrange ordering of equipment, parts and lab supplies as necessary.
  • Ensuring test and rework benches are suitably equipped and maintained.
  • Tidiness of the lab area.
  • Ensure all lab equipment is functional and arrange repair as necessary.
  • Assist with annual calibration of lab equipment (VNAs etc).
  • Modification of boards to IPC-610.
  • Test and measure RF PCBs and their assembly using VNA, Oscilloscope, Spectrum Analyser, etc.
  • Set up and operate test equipment to evaluate RF products and assemblies under different environmental conditions.
  • Construction and assembly of prototype boards and chassis.
  • Construction of wiring looms.

Our ideal candidate:

Our ideal candidate will have previous experience in the construction and testing of RF circuits or similar devices. The ability to read schematic and PCB layout diagrams accurately is essential, as is the ability to follow test procedures and document results meticulously. Proficiency in using RF/Electronic test equipment, such as VNAs, Spectrum Analysers, Signal Generators, Power Meters, Oscilloscopes, and DVMs/DMMs, is required. Additionally, the candidate should have experience in writing and editing Python and LabVIEW scripts to control test equipment and run automated testing.

While some experience with mechanical modification is a plus, it is not essential.

Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) or similar software is necessary.
