Job Description Leonardo UK is excited to be recruiting a Principal EMC Engineer for our Basildon site.

This site-based role will undertake EMC specification, design, development and test work on various Air / Land and Sea projects at system and component level.

The role also requires building and maintaining relationships with customers and suppliers to achieve cost effective and robust EMC solutions in various challenging environments.

The Principal EMC Engineer will also be required to contribute to our UKAS test team and carry out EMC testing and EMC training of other engineers. Thus, experience of UKAS audits and looking after the day to day running and capability enhancement and maintenance of an EMC test facility is essential. The successful applicant will be working in the ISP business unit’s Environmental test group as part of the Design Integrity Function under the Environmental Test Lab Manager.

Your impact This role is to provide EMC / TEMPEST design, development and test support to projects; this includes the development of EMC / TEMPEST requirements and providing robust cost-effective solutions. Customer and supplier liaison is also key to ensure the minimisation of through life EMC cost while offering an innovative and robust solution to our customers’ needs. The production of EMC / TEMPEST documentation for projects will be necessary along with approving suppliers’ documentation and test results. EMC testing forms a major part of the role, both in house and at external EMC test house (possibly at remote locations). The successful applicant will support the Basildon test facility UKAS audit schedule and accreditation. Other duties include EMC test house and equipment maintenance duties.

Salary: Circa £65,000 depending on experience

The opportunity: We’re looking for an RF Design engineer with proven practical design experience for cutting edge defence products. You’ll be working on the research, design and testing of cutting-edge radio-frequency technology for integration into our complex weapons systems, with a focus on utilising your hands on experience to carry out modifications or rapid prototypes where required.

We need a team player who can use their initiative and has a real passion for electronic engineering. The role would ideally suit someone who is comfortable carrying out hands on testing and modifications to boards while having a strong background in RF design.

  • Proven practical RF (component level) design and testing of RF circuits across a wide frequency range ( eg, 30MHz to 30GHz, including LNA Amplifier, High Power Amplifier, filter, local oscillator, synthesiser, modulator design etc)
  • RF design experience for harsh environments (EMC, vibration, thermal)
  • Ability to perform design proving tests and trials in the onsite laboratory
  • Excellent practical skills including soldering, fault finding and the use of RF test equipment including Spectrum Analysers, Power Meters & VNAs
  • Good knowledge of digital, analogue and power supply design
  • Experience using RF design tools ( eg Microwave Office), including layout.
  • Fully conversant with manufacturing techniques and capabilities, including design for manufacture and test.
  • Strong communicator with excellent presentation and report writing skills and the ability to communicate clearly any problems, solutions or results to the team and customer.

We are looking for an RF Design Engineer to work within a skilled team, adding RF designs expertise to the existing embedded, mechanical and firmware disciplines. You’ll be involved in Sustaining Engineering across ECS’s specialist products and New Product Introduction (NPI). This role suits someone with some RF design experience or general electronic design experience, that is eager to grow and develop skills within the RF domain. You will be provided with time, support and training but will be expected to take ownership of assigned work and be self-motivated to improve their skills.

Previous commercial RF or related experience is a bonus. The position focuses on general RF circuit design with the chance to explore advanced technology such as up/down converters, Low Noise Amplifiers, Power Amplifiers, filter designs etc all of which include linear and/or non-linear simulation as part of the design process using Microwave Office (AWR) and/or Ansys (HFSS).

You will report to the Antenna Lead Technical Specialist and work within a team of 15 highly motivated engineers covering electromagnetic design, antenna test, simulation and analysis to support the development of advanced phased array antennas for radar applications through various stages of the engineering lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to or lead research and development projects to advance our design, simulation and measurement capabilities.
  • Develop new or advance existing designs of phased array antenna systems from concept creation through supporting integration, test and analysis.
  • Use various EM simulation codes to analyse and optimise the design and installation impacts of sensors on a ‘stealthy’ vehicle.
  • Support Antenna and Electromagnetic measurement campaigns to validate models and designs.
  • Technical assessment and modelling of system or subsystem design to ensure compatibility with overall system performance.
  • Work with antenna test engineers to define test procedures, create test and analysis plans, report results in a variety of formats e.g. formal reports, automated reports and presentations.
  • Contribute to the planning and progress reports of both development and production antenna test activities.

What You Really Must Have

  • Degree in a STEM subject (Physics, Mathematics, Electronic/Electrical Engineering, System Engineering, or another science-based subject).
  • Experience / Education in at least one of the following areas of Electromagnetics Antenna design/modelling/measurement, Computational Electromagnetic Modelling (CEM), Radio frequency (RF) design, Microwave engineering, Low Observables (LO) or Stealth Technology.
  • Excellent numerical problem-solving skills and an aptitude for lateral thinking.
  • Working knowledge of MATLAB to perform analysis of results. Knowledge of other scripting/programming languages may be considered if it suggests an easy adaptation to MATLAB.
  • The ability to assimilate complicated topics quickly and possess strong communication skills to convey complex subjects to our teams.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build effective relationships with engineers, managers, subject matter experts and customers.
  • A high level of personal resilience when working in a high-pressure environment.

It would be nice of you also had

  • A master’s degree or PhD in a subject such as Physics, Antenna Design, Propagation, Electromagnetics, Microwave engineering, Data Analysis of measured data, etc.
  • Experience in phased array antenna or microwave components measurement using standard RF test equipment (VNA, Spectrum Analyser, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of CST Microwave Studio or similar commercial EM modelling tools.

RINA is looking for an Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Engineer to support significant growth in a variety of safety critical multi-industry sectors.

Managing a wide range of EMC systems assurance related projects, you’ll join a small but busy and engaged team, delivering across multiple sectors including Aerospace & Defence, Rail, Oil & Gas, Power and Infrastructure. This role provides the opportunity to challenge and develop your technical expertise and unleash your project management skills.

RINA is a hybrid working company, but you must be prepared to travel between 25%-50% of the time across the UK, and sometimes internationally. Our offices a in Leatherhead, Chippenham, Manchester and Lincoln, but you do not need to live within commutable distance.

The role This is a client facing role, reporting to the EMC Discipline Lead. You will be accountable for producing EMC system assurance studies, managing complex projects through the full cycle, and facilitating solutions to include:

  • Producing and delivering EMC project technical submissions including; EMC management plans, EMC control plans, EMC risk analysis, EMC design reviews, EMC system assurance files, EMC test plans and EMC analytical desktop studies;
  • Undertaking EM environment site survey measurements and EMC installation inspections;
  • Capturing EMC requirements, proposal writing and support EMC scope of work for large projects;
  • Supporting clients with EMC testing programmes, produce EMC test plans and witness testing where required; this is NOT a sole Test Engineer role though.
