The Opportunity The Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) department is like no other within MBDA. It is split between a test team working hands on in our state-of-the-art EMC Facility to simulate environments and also a highly skilled project consultancy team that is embedded across all projects within MBDA to ensure good EMC practice & design.

This role is in our EMC Test Team, who support MBDA programmes through their product development cycle from Risk Reduction test activities to full Qualification Testing. The majority of the work will be performing various EMC test activities in line with a Test Plan produced by the EMC Project Team as well as the production of the Test Report. The EMC Test Team perform formal tests in the products intended electromagnetic environment at the EMC Laboratories in Bristol.

You will be part of the Leonardo Airborne Communications product development group within the Integrated Sensing & Protection line of business; interacting with partner organisations / sub-contractors and potential customers.

Your Impact

• You will be responsible for delivery of work packages focused on analogue and RF electronics, covering the inter vehicle data link design, system test and integration.
• Modelling of proposed architectures to determine the optimal solution.
• Simulation of RF design.
• Documentation of design including configuration management within Teamcenter.
• Support laboratory hardware demonstrator development and test.

What We Are Looking For These are some of the key things we are looking for, although it’s not necessary to have experience in everything

• Practical hands on experience of RF design of circuitry, ideally between DC and 30 GHz, but if you don’t have experience over this whole range then we’d still be interested to hear from you.
• Experience of working with PCB layout personnel in an advisory capacity.
• Hands on experience of using RF test and measurement equipment to develop and debug RF circuitry.
• Ability to use RF and system modelling and simulation tools.
• Ability to produce concise technical reports detailing design solutions and implementation.
• Ability to understand and follow the business practices, such as design reviews, which come with working in a high technology defence environment.
• Degree in relevant engineering or related scientific discipline (Electronics Engineering preferred).
• As part of an electromechanical project, be willing to work closely with the mechanical team members to create a solution which addresses all design requirements.

It would be nice if you had

• Knowledge / experience of digital or mixed signal design.
• Experience in system level and sub-system integration and debug.
• Experience of working in the defence electronics sector.
• Chartered Engineer status, or a member of a professional engineering institution.

The UK Safran Electrical & Power team has expertise in designing and developing electrical systems comprising generators, power conversion, distribution and control, with developing expertise in electric motors for aircraft propulsion.

As an EMC Engineer at Safran Electrical & Power you will be responsible for EMC test programs, including performing tests against military and civil aviation specifications and constructing test reports, working with the latest technology within the aerospace industry. You will act as the bridge with internal and external customers to identify the equipment required to satisfy end-user requirements. You will utilise your innovative capabilities to develop alternative test techniques to produce the best results. You will assist in mentoring trainee engineers regarding the best practice to meet test requirements, and ensure the labs ISO 17025 accreditation by complying with the relevant quality requirements.

The Role

• Responsible for EMC test projects, and ensuring completion of development and qualification test milestones.
• Perform EMC tests against internal and external customer’s specifications, ensuring you accurately document the results.
• Liaise directly with internal customers across Safran to coordinate EMC test and preparation activities.
• Identify the most efficient equipment required to meet end-user requirements.
• Update internal and external customers on a regular basis during work package activities.
• Ensure quality is kept to the highest standard and meeting ISO 17025 & Safran quality requirements.
• Define, develop and help validate alternative test techniques and methods to improve test duration, accuracy and other improvements.
• Raise purchase requisitions and log expenses to ensure accurate tracking of EMC lab budgetary spend.

Desirable Experience We are looking for candidates with a range of skills and experience, but we’re also keen to help people grow and develop in this role. If you have some or all of the following, we’d love to hear from you:

• HNC or equivalent in electronics or telecommunications.
• Detailed understanding of EMC specifications and standards.
• High level of EMC test experience and technical knowledge regarding aerospace and military test specifications.
• Experience configuring EMC test equipment, including writing EMC test equipment software drivers.
• Ability to write and produce EMC test plans and reports under.
• Aptitude for hands-on work and experience with drilling, soldering and wiring.
• Evidence of written English at interview stage.
