Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electronics Engineering, or equivalent qualification in the relevant field

  • Experience in development and use of RF performance models (e.g., Microwave Office) and PCB circuit layout design (e.g., Altium)
  • Experience in designing solutions with very low SWaP-C (Size, Weight and Power, and Cost)
  • Experience in RF design for harsh environments (EMC, vibration, thermal)Experience of overseeing the transition of development hardware into production, including environmental testing, qualification testing and design certification
  • Experience working with spectrum analysers, vector analysers, power meters, signal generators, filters, switches, receivers, and power supplies

Main Duties And Responsibilities

  • Work closely with customers, Engineers and Project Managers to provide EMC testing in both screened enclosure and in-situ environments.
  • Provide support to customers in advance of, or during, the test programme, particularly communicating issues during any failure phase of their EMC test programme.
  • Maintain data and electronic logbooks for testing
  • Test procedure generation including provision of photos and measurement uncertainty calculations.
  • Develop test plans (where required) and generate test reports.
  • Contribute to test equipment / method development and evaluation.
  • Support the validation of clients’ requirements (which may require site visits).
  • Offer assistance to the sales team with the provision of technical information to enable quote generation.
  • Develop as specialist in a specific area of testing i.e. rail, marine, radio EMC requirements, etc.
  • Provision of training to engineers regarding specialist area.

Essential Criteria

  • Experience as an EMC Test Engineer in a test house environment with demonstrable knowledge and understanding of the EMC Directive and/or relevant EMC test standards.
  • Experience of using test equipment such as a spectrum/network analyser, oscilloscope, signal generator or RF power meter.
  • Self-driven with an enthusiastic approach and willingness to learn/develop technical skills.
  • Willing to work overtime and shiftwork as and when required

Highly Desirable Criteria

  • Computer literate with good IT skills, particularly using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and bespoke test systems.

RINA is looking for an Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Engineer to support significant growth in a variety of safety critical multi-industry sectors.

Managing a wide range of EMC systems assurance related projects, you’ll join a small but busy and engaged team, delivering across multiple sectors including Aerospace & Defence, Rail, Oil & Gas, Power and Infrastructure. This role provides the opportunity to challenge and develop your technical expertise and unleash your project management skills.

The role This is a client facing role, reporting to the EMC Discipline Lead. You will be accountable for producing EMC system assurance studies, managing complex projects through the full cycle, and facilitating solutions to include:

  • Producing and delivering EMC project technical submissions including; EMC management plans, EMC control plans, EMC risk analysis, EMC design reviews, EMC system assurance files, EMC test plans and EMC analytical desktop studies;
  • Undertaking EM environment site survey measurements and EMC installation inspections;
  • Capturing EMC requirements, proposal writing and support EMC scope of work for large projects;
  • Supporting clients with EMC testing programmes, produce EMC test plans and witness testing where required; this is NOT a sole Test Engineer role though.

  • Lead the design, simulation, and development of RF and mmWave circuits, components, and subsystems
  • Conduct RF system analysis, performance optimisation, and troubleshooting of complex designs
  • Carry out RF measurements, characterisation, and validation of prototypes and production hardware
  • Develop and maintain detailed technical documentation, including design reports, test plans, and results
  • Ensure designs meet required specifications, standards, and customer requirements
  • Contribute to technology and product roadmaps with innovative RF design solutions
  • Support RFQs, proposals, and customer engagements with technical input where required

Project & Product Management:

  • Work with project managers and engineering leads to deliver designs on time, within budget, and to agreed quality standards
  • Support the transition of designs from concept through prototyping into volume manufacturing
  • Collaborate with process engineering and operations to ensure manufacturability and yield of RF products
  • Assist in risk identification and mitigation during the design and development process

Collaboration & Communication:

  • Work closely with electronics, mechanical, software, and systems engineers to deliver integrated solutions
  • Provide technical expertise and support to internal and external stakeholders, including customers
  • Present technical work and project updates to peers, management, and customers as required

As an RF Test Engineer at Spire, you’ll be at the cutting edge of transforming satellite designs into production-ready builds. Your work will directly improve RF product quality, streamline manufacturing flow, and ensure seamless transitions from complex engineering concepts to scalable, high-reliability production.

You’ll define the standards, calibration practices, and test processes that underpin consistent RF performance, while maintaining the infrastructure and equipment that enable repeatable results. This is a unique opportunity to shape how advanced RF systems are built and tested, driving performance and quality from the ground up.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead the transition of RF designs into production by developing and validating repeatable manufacturing and test processes.
  • Own calibration, readiness, and maintenance of all RF test equipment, including VNAs, spectrum analyzers, and anechoic chambers, ensuring measurement integrity and compliance.
  • Develop and review detailed work instructions, translating complex RF engineering requirements into clear technician-level procedures.
  • Feed manufacturability, testability, and process improvement recommendations back to design teams, ensuring updates are reflected in production documentation.
  • Participate in build readiness reviews, ensuring documentation maturity, and tooling/test equipment readiness.
  • Collaborate with quality assurance to ensure processes meet performance and reliability requirements, and incorporate lessons learned into continuous improvement.
  • Provide early training and guidance to production teams, ensuring key RF considerations and care points are well understood ahead of builds.

Key Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of RF fundamentals with hands-on experience using VNAs, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, and other RF test equipment.
  • Experience developing, documenting, and optimizing manufacturing and test processes.
  • Proven ability to manage calibration programs and maintain quality standards for RF equipment and facilities.
  • Clear communication and collaboration skills across engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with antenna measurements, anechoic chamber testing, and over-the-air validation.
  • Familiarity with automated test scripting and data analysis (Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB).
  • Exposure to Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles and ability to influence design decisions.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced, evolving engineering environment.

Spire operates a hybrid work model, and this position will require you to work a minimum of three days per week in the office.

About the role

Join our Quality team in Brighton as an EMC Test Engineer, where you’ll play a key role in ensuring our products meet compliance standards. You’ll carry out EMC and environmental testing for Paxton and external customer products in our ISO17025 accredited test facility. This is a hands-on role in a collaborative environment, perfect for someone passionate about electronics and compliance testing.

  • Extensive hands-on experience with lab instruments such as network analysers, spectrum analysers, signal generators and oscilloscopes.
  • Proven experience of design, simulation, prototyping, and testing of baseband, IF, and RF circuits
  • Expertise in schematic capture and PCB layout for multilayer RF designs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Experience In The Following Areas Would Be Highly Advantageous

  • Receivers, Transmitters, Synthesizers, VCOs, low noise amplifiers, power amplifiers, mixers and filters
  • Radio propagation, transceiver architecture, modulation schemes, antenna theory and radio/EMC compliance
