In this key leadership role, you’ll oversee all RF testing activities across multiple space programmes, including RF preparation tasks for telecoms payloads testing and ensuring that test systems solutions are developed on time, on cost & on quality (including Product Regulatory Compliance, where appropriate). You’ll lead a team of skilled engineers, driving operational performance, technical excellence and continuous improvement in one of Europe’s most advanced RF test environments.

You’ll define the vision and strategy for RF test, ensuring safe, efficient and on-time delivery of complex test campaigns. Working closely with Engineering, Quality and Programme teams you’ll play a pivotal role in ensuring that our spacecraft meet the highest standards of performance and reliability.

About You We’re looking for a proactive and collaborative leader who combines deep technical knowledge with strong people and operational management skills:

  • Experience in RF testing within aerospace, defence or high-reliability communication systems
  • Proven ability to lead technical teams and manage complex operational environments
  • Understanding of RF test principles, measurement systems and payload performance validation
  • Excellent communication, leadership and stakeholder management skills
  • Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical, Electronic or Communications Engineering
  • Experience of regulatory compliance requirements

Summary of Responsibilities:

Requirements

Come and join our expanding Electronic Warfare Operations Support Group (EWOS) which is made up of 60+ electronic warfare specialists. From all manner of backgrounds, our engineers, scientists, and ex-military personnel combine their experience to help our customers achieve the true operational potential and help keep their people and platforms safe.

We are continuing to grow our team at Porton Down, Salisbury, working on key state-of-the-art research, development, and delivery projects, led by our technical customer.

The primary role is to support testing and optimisation of RF receiver hardware in a new synthetic range (laboratory), with additional support to over-the-air testing (anechoic chamber) and field trials. This will require using a range of RF test equipment to perform digital and analogue injection testing within synthetic EW scenarios.

This role will allow autonomy to explore ways to optimise RF receiver performance through configurable memory (mission data) to improve real-world operation of the system when deployed to target platforms. This exploratory process will focus on the increasingly congested and contested electromagnetic environment, developing tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP) for the RF receiver.

To accurately represent the synthetic use cases these systems are required to integrate into, the role will liaise with military, academia, industry and international stakeholders, to complete the validation process.

This new lab will be using the latest commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) development Radio Frequency System on Chip (RFSoC) boards to achieve a high-fidelity electromagnetic environment. You will become and expert in configuring and calibrating these devices to aid testing of the RF receiver systems.

This role also has influence over future development work, driving requirements through analysis of current EW systems. As such and understanding of requirements generation and the engineering lifecycle will be valuable to the role.

Working autonomously with unprecedented access to the customer, you will be crucial to ensure the success of these key projects, all whilst being supported by our on-site and home-site MASS teams.

Essential:

  • Ability to work autonomously to optimise complex EW system performance.
  • Understanding of RF sensor systems and Test & Evaluation (T&E) practices.

We are seeking a highly experienced and driven Lead RF Systems Engineer / Technical Lead to join our growing capability team focused on development of RF systems. This role is ideal for a systems-level thinker with deep expertise in RF technologies who thrives at the interface of multi-disciplinary teams and excels in shaping innovative system solutions from concept through to demonstrator.

Key Responsibilities
  • Technical Leadership: Provide technical leadership across Sense & Effect development projects, from early-stage R&D (TRL 2-4) through to advanced technology demonstrators (TRL5/6 and beyond).

You will play a crucial part integrating, configuring and verifying performance of a wide range of components used within a laboratory environment. This will involve the generation of test programmes using a variety of test equipment.

Working autonomously, you will be crucial to ensure the success of key projects, all whilst being supported by our on-site MASS teams. The Opportunity The Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) department is like no other within MBDA. It is split between a test team working hands on in our state-of-the-art EMC Facility to simulate environments and also a highly skilled project consultancy team that is embedded across all projects within MBDA to ensure good EMC practice & design.

This role is in our EMC Test Team, who support MBDA programmes through their product development cycle from Risk Reduction test activities to full Qualification Testing. The majority of the work will be performing various EMC test activities in line with a Test Plan produced by the EMC Project Team as well as the production of the Test Report. The EMC Test Team perform formal tests in the products intended electromagnetic environment at the EMC Laboratories in Bristol.

What are we looking for: Essential

  • Previous experience in EMC Testing to Defence Standards.
  • Previous experience using Compliance 5 and EMC 32 Software
  • Higher education or significant experience within subject fields: Electronics, Electrical, Physics, EMC or similar.
  • An understanding of EMC and design principles.
  • Excellent communication skills at all levels, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work to defined deadlines and within budget limits.
  • Excellent Analytical and Problem Solving skills.
  • Professional manner and adaptability when the companies needs are evolving.
  • Capable of working autonomously to meet the delivery needs of the company

Desirable

  • Knowledge in the application of a military EMC standard to system, sub-system or equipment level is desirable (e.g. Defence Standard 59-41 / 59-411, AECTP500, Mil-Std-461, RTCA DO160 / EUROCAE ED-14).
  • Engineer’s with previous experience in delivering support around the subject of electromagnetic compatibility.

Role Overview

Key Responsibilities
