The Role

As a Senior or Principal EMC Engineer at Safran Electrical & Power you will be responsible for EMC test programs, including performing tests against military and civil aviation specifications and constructing test reports, working with the latest technology within the aerospace industry. You will act as the bridge with internal and external customers to identify the equipment required to satisfy end-user requirements. You will utilise your innovative capabilities to develop alternative test techniques to produce the best results. You will assist in mentoring junior engineers regarding the best practice to meet test requirements, and ensure the labs ISO 17025 accreditation by complying with the relevant requirements.

*Responsible for EMC test projects, and ensuring completion of development and qualification test milestones.
*Perform EMC tests against internal and external customer’s specifications, ensuring you accurately document the results.
*Liaise directly with internal customers across Safran to coordinate EMC test and preparation activities.
*Identify the most efficient equipment required to meet end-user requirements.
*Update internal and external customers on a regular basis during work package activities.
*Mentor trainee engineers to be able to perform tests independently, ensuring quality is kept to the highest standard and meeting ISO 17025 & Safran quality requirements.
*Define, develop and help validate alternative test techniques and methods to improve test duration, accuracy and other improvements.

Leonardo UK is excited to be recruiting a Principal EMC Engineer for our Basildon site.

This site-based role will undertake EMC specification, design, development and test work on various Air / Land and Sea projects at system and component level.

The role also requires building and maintaining relationships with customers and suppliers to achieve cost effective and robust EMC solutions in various challenging environments.

The Principal EMC Engineer will also be required to contribute to our UKAS test team and carry out EMC testing and EMC training of other engineers. Thus, experience of UKAS audits and looking after the day to day running and capability enhancement and maintenance of an EMC test facility is essential.

The successful applicant will be working in the ISP business unit’s Environmental test group as part of the Design Integrity Function under the Environmental Test Lab Manager.

Your impact

This role is to provide EMC / TEMPEST design, development and test support to projects; this includes the development of EMC / TEMPEST requirements and providing robust cost-effective solutions. Customer and supplier liaison is also key to ensure the minimisation of through life EMC cost while offering an innovative and robust solution to our customers’ needs. The production of EMC / TEMPEST documentation for projects will be necessary along with approving suppliers’ documentation and test results. EMC testing forms a major part of the role, both in house and at external EMC test house (possibly at remote locations). The successful applicant will support the Basildon test facility UKAS audit schedule and accreditation. Other duties include EMC test house and equipment maintenance duties.

Join our team to provide hands-on RF and analogue support, focusing mainly on the HF domain with opportunities to work in VHF as well. Your day-to-day will involve evaluating solutions, troubleshooting, and designing circuits using simulation tools like RF and Spice to enhance development. This is a high-impact role contributing to the design of mission-critical hardware operating in harsh environments.

  • Designing analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuits, with a focus on low noise, radiation tolerance, and temperature extremes.
  • Developing DC-DC converters, motor drives, and power distribution units.
  • Implementing EMI/EMC mitigation strategies across PCB and system level, aligned with DO-160 and MIL-STD-461G.
  • Leading pre-compliance and compliance testing, including radiated/conducted emissions & susceptibility.
  • Supporting system-level grounding, shielding, filtering, and bonding.

RBSL is looking for an experienced EMC Engineer to join our busy team in Telford. You must hold a valid UK Security Clearance or be able to attain it, in order to perform this role.

Reporting to the Electrical Architecture Lead, you will have good demonstrable knowledge of EMC design standards and their application in real world projects. The work involves working closely with military equipment design engineers (electrical and mechanical) and other stakeholders (Customers and Suppliers) liaising with internal departments including Engineering Management, Project Management, Mechanical Design, Purchasing, MED and Operations.

Position Duties And Responsibilities

The role will provide support to the RBSL EMC Function with particular focus on the following duties and responsibilities:-

  • Providing a technical focus and point of contact for design engineers, suppliers and Customers (i.e. MOD) on all EMC related issues during all phases of the product lifecycle
  • EMC requirements assessment and capture for sub-systems and Platforms (e.g. Def Stan 59-411 and 61-5)
  • EMC risk assessment and mitigations at component, sub-system and Platform level
  • Developing EMC solutions for sub-systems and Platforms
  • Technical bid response preparation
  • Producing and reviewing EMC documentation for sub-systems and Platforms (e.g. control plans, test plans, test reports)
  • EMC trials planning, execution, reporting and liaising with external EMC Test Houses
  • Providing test resource capability for onsite EMC testing of sub-systems and Platforms
  • Maintaining, developing and upgrading on-site EMC test capabilities and equipment

We are seeking a Principal EMC Engineer with specialist knowledge in Military and Aerospace EMC standards (e.g. DEF STAN 59-411, MIL-STD-461, RTCA DO-160) to join our expert team. This is a senior-level position providing technical leadership both internally and externally – from supporting UKAS ISO/IEC 17025 audits and developing procedures, to mentoring engineers and engaging directly with customers.

This role is ideal for someone with deep EMC technical knowledge who is confident in leading complex projects, reviewing and signing technical reports, and shaping the future of testing for defence, aerospace, and other high-integrity sectors.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership across Mil/Aero EMC testing activities, ensuring high-quality execution and compliance.
  • Serve as a report signatory for test reports under ISO/IEC 17025, ensuring accuracy, technical integrity, and traceability.
  • Support and guide engineers in test preparation, execution, and troubleshooting for DEF STAN, MIL-STD-461, DO-160, and related standards.

Skills / Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a report signatory within an accredited lab.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to guide both internal staff and external customers.
  • Demonstrable experience in developing and maintaining technical procedures and ensuring quality standards.
  • Familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025 audit processes and requirements.
