Senior Electronics Engineer (RF Focus)

Introduction

We are looking for a Senior RF Electronics Engineer to join our world class multidisciplinary team to help solve complex technical challenges across a broad range of industries.

The role

At Cambridge Consultants we help our clients develop breakthrough technology across a broad range of industries including Energy and Industrial, Defence and Security, Consumer, Telecoms, Healthcare and Biotechnology, among various others.

As a Senior Electronics Engineer with an RF focus you will work with our multi-disciplinary project teams to own and solve the electronics aspects of complex technical challenges for a variety of clients within these industries, from start-ups to established multinational organizations and government entities.

You will initially establish yourself as a safe pair of hands delivering electronics designs. While some of your work will involve general-purpose electronics design, you will also be a key specialist for RF design projects.

We will provide the time and support needed to acquire additional specialist skills, such as antenna design, the use of tools such as CST or HFSS, Microwave Office, Keysight ADS, design-for, testing and debugging of EMC, and the use of our Altium PCB design tools alongside our dedicated ECAD specialists.

We are keen to support the development of our employees, and as such offer an extensive inhouse training program. As you advance within the organisation there will be plenty of opportunities for you to develop your technical skills and specialism, take on more leadership responsibilities and/or focus more on supporting the development of sales opportunities.

What will you be doing?

Some interesting high-speed electronics challenges that we’ve previously solved include:

  • Overcoming smart meter challenges for the last 5% by developing a custom ZigBee to Long-Range Radio Bridge
  • Design of a low-power, high-performance smart wearable for Accesso integrating multiple radios
  • Developing a novel air-interface and bespoke communication systems for the Ocado Smart Platform controlling hundreds of robots in grocery distribution centres
  • Developing the Iridium Extreme satellite phone, the first truly-global ‘push-to-talk’ mobile communications system
  • Next-generation Explosive Ordnance Disposal for the British Army

Every project we do is different – we are always innovating rather than iterating, so each new project will be a brand-new challenge.

You will also have access to our extensive in-house facilities. Should you attend a face-to-face interview, we’ll provide a tour of our labs which support hardware development engineering during your visit. These include:

  • Prototype PCB manufacturing facilities, including SMT pick-and-place, vapour-phase reflow and x-ray inspection
  • EMC emissions test facility
  • 5GHz 360° antenna test facility

What can you bring?

We are looking for someone with prior commercial work experience, but beyond that we can tailor the exact offer based on the amount of experience and capability demonstrated through our interview process.

This is a client-facing role, so you will need to demonstrate great communications skills and a genuine passion for engineering!

The essential technical requirements are:

  • Strong academic background with an electronics-related undergraduate degree
  • Solid understanding of the fundamentals of electronic circuit design
  • Specialist RF electronics design experience, such as RF LNAs, RF Power Amplifiers and associated circuits
  • Experience of low-noise DC switched-mode power-supply (SMPS) design
  • Hands on lab experience owning the structured bring-up and test of your board designs using test equipment such as vector network analysers (VNAs), spectrum analysers and signal generators.

Due to the nature of some of our key projects, you must be eligible for UK security clearance to be considered for this role.

Your needs are as unique as you are. Hybrid working is a way in which our people can balance their time between the office, home, or another remote location. It’s a locally managed and flexed informal discretionary arrangement. As a minimum we’re all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, on average three days per week.

What You Will Be Doing

With this attractive opportunity you will get a chance to:

  • Define and translate radio frequency (RF) requirements into practical design constraints, ensuring alignment with adjacent functional disciplines and rig test requirements.
  • Develop and assess powerplant concepts that meet RF demands, applying advanced analytical methods to support robust, optimised solutions across platform and powerplant levels.
  • Collaborate across engineering functions to reduce technical risk, perform electromagnetic analyses, and carry out verification and validation activities to ensure requirements are met.
  • Lead the capture, management and communication of RF technical knowledge, including modelling, test data, reporting and evidence cataloguing to maintain technical integrity throughout the lifecycle.

Who We’re Looking For

At Rolls-Royce we put safety first, do the right thing, keep it simple and make a difference. These principles form the behaviours that guide us and are an essential component of our assessment process. They are the fundamental qualities that we seek for all roles.

To be successful in this role you will need to:

  • Hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physics or Engineering (or regional equivalent), or demonstrate equivalent experience.
  • Bring strong technical knowledge in electromagnetic analysis and design methodologies, with awareness of cross-discipline concepts such as manufacturing engineering, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, mechanical/thermal analysis, cost engineering and product definition.
  • Have experience using commercial Computational Electromagnetics (CEM) tools such as FEKO, CST or HFSS, with a good understanding of the strengths and limitations of different analysis fidelities.
  • Apply logical, analytical and innovative thinking to solve complex technical problems and make balanced decisions across both technical and business considerations.
  • Communicate effectively, with the ability to present complex information clearly and confidently to stakeholders at all levels.

We are an equal opportunities employer. We’re committed to developing a diverse workforce and an inclusive working environment. We believe that people from different backgrounds and cultures give us different perspectives which are crucial to innovation and problem solving. We believe the more diverse perspectives we have, the more successful we’ll be. By building a culture of caring and belonging, we give everyone who works here the opportunity to realise their full potential.
