Salary: Circa £65,000 depending on experience

The opportunity: We’re looking for an RF Design engineer with proven practical design experience for cutting edge defence products. You’ll be working on the research, design and testing of cutting-edge radio-frequency technology for integration into our complex weapons systems, with a focus on utilising your hands on experience to carry out modifications or rapid prototypes where required.

We need a team player who can use their initiative and has a real passion for electronic engineering. The role would ideally suit someone who is comfortable carrying out hands on testing and modifications to boards while having a strong background in RF design.

What we’re looking for from you:

  • Proven practical RF (component level) design and testing of RF circuits across a wide frequency range ( eg, 30MHz to 30GHz, including LNA Amplifier, High Power Amplifier, filter, local oscillator, synthesiser, modulator design etc)
  • RF design experience for harsh environments (EMC, vibration, thermal)
  • Ability to perform design proving tests and trials in the onsite laboratory
  • Excellent practical skills including soldering, fault finding and the use of RF test equipment including Spectrum Analysers, Power Meters & VNAs
  • Good knowledge of digital, analogue and power supply design
  • Experience using RF design tools ( eg Microwave Office), including layout.
  • Fully conversant with manufacturing techniques and capabilities, including design for manufacture and test.
  • Strong communicator with excellent presentation and report writing skills and the ability to communicate clearly any problems, solutions or results to the team and customer.

Job Duties

  • Responsible for architecture development and specifications for the radio, sub-systems and cell level designs. Responsible for maintaining specifications and Matlab models as designs progress. This involves working closely with the analogue circuit designers through the complete design flow and verification to ensure system level specifications are met.
  • Focused on initial bring-up and debugging of radio macros for transmit, receive and frequency generation (LO).
  • Developing and testing radio calibration, control and BIST algorithms.
  • Interfacing to the Firmware/Software teams on radio control and calibration issues.
  • Longer term duties include: Advancing radio architecture designs to meet future business defined requirements. This is with particular emphasis on maximizing radio performance while retaining low power dissipation to conserve battery life in mobile platforms.

Preferred Experience

  • 8yrs + Industrial experience in radio transceiver system design for single chip integrated solutions.
  • Must have good understanding of radio transceiver architectures, key performance requirements, RF interfaces to antennas and external RF components, impedance matching, S-parameters and the use of Smith charts.
  • Must have experience in Matlab model development and simulation. Experience with using Simulink to model and simulate systems and sub-systems is also required.
  • Must be able to prepare, present and document work undertaken in a clear and concise manner.
  • Experience with Python and embedded C scripting & System Verilog coding is preferred.
  • Lab based RF measurement and silicon validation background
  • Experience using SVAMS Models is also advantageous
  • A reasonable understanding of digital architectures, implementation and RTL language code is beneficial but not essential.

What You’ll Do:

The Antenna Field Engineer will be responsible to support operation, troubleshooting and diagnosis of field-related trouble calls, and issues associated with earth station and satellite network systems. • Support of installation, commissioning, and integration with OneWeb Partners

Beyond core development, ESS also integrates critical supporting processes such as project management, risk assessment, functional safety, and cybersecurity, ensuring compliance with ASPICE standards and delivering reliable, secure, and high-quality embedded systems & solutions.

The Role:

 

We are seeking a Technical Expert to own the vehicle-level antenna system architecture, performance, and validation for automotive platforms. This role is responsible for end-to-end antenna system definition and integration for GPS/GNSS, DAB, FM/AM, and Satellite Radio (SXM), working closely with internal infotainment, telematics, EMC, and vehicle engineering teams, as well as managing Tier-1 suppliers. The position includes strong ownership of DFMEA and DVP&R activities and close collaboration with radio tuner and antenna amplifierdevelopment teams to ensure robust, production-ready RF performance.

 

Area of Responsibility  

 

System Ownership & Architecture 

    • Own the vehicle antenna system architecture across multiple vehicle platforms and programs
    • Define system requirements and performance targets for GPS/GNSS, DAB, FM/AM, and SXM antennas
    • Specify antenna concepts (roof, glass, shark-fin, bumper, mirror, etc.) considering styling, vehicle packaging, cost, and manufacturing constraints
    • Define interfaces between antennas, antenna amplifiers, cabling, and radio tuners

 

Vehicle Integration & Performance 

    • Lead vehicle-level antenna integration, placement, grounding, and interaction with BIW, trims, and glass
    • Ensure optimal system performance in real-world vehicle environments, including mitigation of detuning, coupling, and noise
    • Work closely with radio tuner teams to optimize system sensitivity, selectivity, and robustness

 

DFMEA, DVP & Validation 

    • Lead DFMEA for antenna and RF systems; identify risks, define mitigation strategies, and track closure across development phases
    • Own and approve DVP&R / DVP plans for antenna systems at component, subsystem, and vehicle levels
    • Review and approve validation results, ensuring compliance with OEM targets and regulatory requirements
    • Support DV/PV, EMC, and vehicle-level sign-off activities

 

Supplier & Program Management 

    • Act as the technical interface to Tier-1 suppliers for antennas, amplifiers, and RF components
    • Review and approve supplier designs, simulations, DFMEA, DVP results, and change requests
    • Drive technical issue resolution with suppliers and internal stakeholders
    • Support sourcing decisions and technical evaluations during supplier nomination

 

Cross-Functional Leadership 

    • Collaborate with infotainment, telematics, EMC, body engineering, styling, manufacturing, and quality teams
    • Participate in system design reviews, vehicle milestones, and program gateways
    • Contribute to OEM antenna standards, design guidelines, and lessons learned
    • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership within the antenna/RF domain

Knowledge / Experience

·        Extensive experience with automotive antenna systems: GPS/GNSS, DAB, FM/AM, and SXM

·        Strong experience working at vehicle system level within an automotive OEM environment

The project is in the early phases of the lifecycle and you will be supporting from the project from the concept design phase though to delivery and installation testing.

We currently have an opportunity for an experienced Principal Electrical Engineer/EMC Specialist, with particular specialism in complex electromagnetic environments of RADAR systems and integration of RADAR onto a maritime platform.

Responsibilities

  • The Principal Electrical Engineer/EMC Specialist will be responsible for ensuring that all systems (including power, digital processing, communications, mechanical and electrical (M&E) assets) are designed, installed and tested to meet the stringent EMC requirements of an operational maritme defence platform. Your expertise will be vital in preventing electromagnetic interference (EMI) between safety-critical systems, ensuring once itegrated the system operates safely and reliably.
  • Ensuring projects are completed to meet all client’s requirements and applicable standards and to an agreed budget and programme.
  • Act as the technical lead for all EMC matters
  • Develop, maintain and manage EMC Management Plans
  • Proactively identify and manage complex EMC interfaces between systems.
  • Lead and contribute to EMC-related hazard identification (HAZID) and risk assessments. Ensure all EMC risks are captured in the project Hazard Log and managed to an ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable) level.
  • Investigate and lead the resolution of any EMC issues, failures or non-conformances identified during construction, testing, or commissioning.
  • Liaise directly with design and build team, system suppliers, internal and external bodies to ensure a unified and compliant approach to EMC.

Qualifications

Job Description We are excited to be recruiting for an experienced Engineer with microwave engineering knowledge, familiar with working on complex electronic (ideally RF-based) sensor systems.

The role can be based in either Southampton or Bristol and will focus on the electronics design of the RF and control subsystems; to be implemented on laboratory and aircraft concept demonstrators.

You will provide technical support throughout the product lifecycle including design implementation, integration and test, system trials and product delivery.

You will be part of the Leonardo Airborne Communications product development group within the Integrated Sensing & Protection line of business; interacting with partner organisations / sub-contractors and potential customers.

Your Impact

  • You will be responsible for delivery of work packages focused on analogue and RF electronics, covering the inter vehicle data link design, system test and integration.
  • Modelling of proposed architectures to determine the optimal solution.
  • Simulation of RF design.
  • Documentation of design including configuration management within Teamcenter.
  • Support laboratory hardware demonstrator development and test.

What We Are Looking For These are some of the key things we are looking for, although it’s not necessary to have experience in everything

  • Practical hands on experience of RF design of circuitry, ideally between DC and 30 GHz, but if you don’t have experience over this whole range then we’d still be interested to hear from you.
  • Experience of working with PCB layout personnel in an advisory capacity.
  • Hands on experience of using RF test and measurement equipment to develop and debug RF circuitry.
  • Ability to use RF and system modelling and simulation tools.
  • Ability to produce concise technical reports detailing design solutions and implementation.
  • Ability to understand and follow the business practices, such as design reviews, which come with working in a high technology defence environment.
  • Degree in relevant engineering or related scientific discipline (Electronics Engineering preferred).
  • As part of an electromechanical project, be willing to work closely with the mechanical team members to create a solution which addresses all design requirements.

It would be nice if you had

  • Knowledge / experience of digital or mixed signal design.
  • Experience in system level and sub-system integration and debug.
  • Experience of working in the defence electronics sector.
  • Chartered Engineer status, or a member of a professional engineering institution.
