Context

We currently have an opportunity for an experienced Principal Electrical Engineer/EMC Specialist, with particular specialism in complex electromagnetic environments of railway lineside infrastructure and high-speed tunnels, to join our engineering team. This position within our MEP engineering team will suit a committed and ambitious engineer who can demonstrate strong leadership and interpersonal skills combined with commercial awareness and the ability to play their part in a dynamic high-performance team.

The Principal Electrical Engineer/EMC Specialist will be responsible for ensuring that all lineside and tunnel systems (including power, signalling, communications, mechanical and electrical (M&E) assets) are designed, installed and tested to meet the stringent EMC requirements of a high-speed railway. Your expertise will be vital in preventing electromagnetic interference (EMI) between safety-critical systems, ensuring the railway operates safely and reliably.

  • This role requires considerable professional experience and expertise in order to manage complex or non-standard design solutions.
  • Have a good understanding of CSM/CDM regulations and requirements.
  • Good communication and presentation skills for external presentations to clients.
  • Maintaining good relationships with all external parties to enhance the reputation of the company.

Missions/Main Duties

Duties The Principal Electrical Engineer/EMC Specialist’s main duties will be to manage the complex EMC interfaces for a high-speed rail environment and to be responsible for:

  • Ensuring projects are completed to meet all client’s requirements and applicable standards and to an agreed budget and programme.
  • Plan the project works and provide forward view resource forecasting to enable the team leader to allocate suitable resource to the projects.
  • Identify changes to the projects client requirements and raise the changes with the SYSTRA Project Management Team.
  • Provide monthly cost to complete forecasts to the SYSTRA Project Management Team.
  • Act as the technical lead for all EMC matters related to lineside and tunnel systems.
  • Develop, maintain and manage EMC Management Plans for specific assets, focusing on the unique challenges of confined tunnel spaces and extensive lineside routes.
  • Proactively identify and manage complex EMC interfaces between railway systems.
  • Lead and contribute to EMC-related hazard identification (HAZID) and risk assessments. Ensure all EMC risks are captured in the project Hazard Log and managed to an ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable) level.
  • Investigate and lead the resolution of any EMC issues, failures or non-conformances identified during construction, testing, or commissioning.
  • Liaise directly with design and build contractors, system suppliers, internal departments (such as Power, Signalling and Civils) and external bodies to ensure a unified and compliant approach to EMC.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary meetings and interface management with civil, structural, architectural, and rail systems engineering teams.
  • Support the implementation of sustainability and energy efficiency measures.
  • Monitor project progress and technical issues; prepare progress, quality and safety documentation as required.
  • Support value engineering, risk assessments and technical query resolution.

Profile/Skills

Essential

  • Minimum 15 years of experience in EMC matters with a strong focus on rail/high-speed rail or transportation sectors.
  • Extensive, proven experience as an EMC engineer or specialist within a complex, large-scale infrastructure project.
  • Deep technical knowledge of railway EMC and the governing standards, particularly the EN 50121 series (Railway applications – Electromagnetic compatibility).
  • Experience of the production and review of the following documents:-
    • EMC Strategy
    • EMC Control Plan
    • EMC Management Plan
  • Experience of working with multidisciplinary teams in large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; fluent in English.
  • Flexibility in working hours will be required to meet the demands of the role.

Role Overview: We are looking for an RF engineer who is excited by the challenge of building cutting-edge RF modules in a fast-moving start-up environment. You will collaborate with IC designers, systems engineers, and software teams to integrate advanced RF technologies into high-performance multi-chip modules and help drive innovative wireless solutions to market.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop RF front-end circuits and RF functional blocks to meet the specified performance requirements
  • Collaborate with internal and external IC design teams developing integrated digital tuneable capacitors, power amplifiers (PAs), low noise amplifiers (LNAs), RF switches, digital interfaces, and power management solutions
  • Integrate these design blocks into multi-chip modules, ensuring low-loss and high-performance implementations
  • Optimise module layouts to balance size, performance, and manufacturability
  • Work closely with applications, systems, algorithm, and software teams to optimise overall module performance within target applications
  • Partner with internal stakeholders and test teams to define, develop, and deliver comprehensive module test plans

Education & experience:

  • Experience developing RF modules or sub-systems (PAs, LNAs, duplexers, filters, etc) intended for high-volume production
  • Knowledge of low-noise, low-power, and high-linearity design techniques used in 4G/5G RF front-end modules
  • A strong understanding of RF fundamentals, including impedance matching, Smith charts, passive RLC networks, linearity, and harmonic behaviour
  • Experience using RF simulation tools such as ADS, Microwave Office, or similar RF design environments

We currently have an opportunity for an experienced Principal Electrical Engineer/EMC Specialist, with particular specialism in complex electromagnetic environments of RADAR systems and integration of RADAR onto a maritime platform.

  • The Principal Electrical Engineer/EMC Specialist will be responsible for ensuring that all systems (including power, digital processing, communications, mechanical and electrical (M&E) assets) are designed, installed and tested to meet the stringent EMC requirements of an operational maritme defence platform. Your expertise will be vital in preventing electromagnetic interference (EMI) between safety-critical systems, ensuring once itegrated the system operates safely and reliably.
  • Ensuring projects are completed to meet all client’s requirements and applicable standards and to an agreed budget and programme.
  • Act as the technical lead for all EMC matters
  • Develop, maintain and manage EMC Management Plans
  • Proactively identify and manage complex EMC interfaces between systems.
  • Lead and contribute to EMC-related hazard identification (HAZID) and risk assessments. Ensure all EMC risks are captured in the project Hazard Log and managed to an ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable) level.
  • Investigate and lead the resolution of any EMC issues, failures or non-conformances identified during construction, testing, or commissioning.
  • Liaise directly with design and build team, system suppliers, internal and external bodies to ensure a unified and compliant approach to EMC.

Job Description We are excited to be recruiting for an experience Engineer with microwave engineering knowledge, familiar with working on complex electronic (ideally RF-based) sensor systems.

The role can be based in either Southampton or Bristol and will focus on the electronics design of the RF and control subsystems; to be implemented on laboratory and aircraft concept demonstrators.

You will provide technical support throughout the product lifecycle including design implementation, integration and test, system trials and product delivery.

You will be part of the Leonardo Airborne Communications product development group within the Integrated Sensing & Protection line of business; interacting with partner organisations / sub-contractors and potential customers.

Your Impact

  • You will be responsible for delivery of work packages focused on analogue and RF electronics, covering the inter vehicle data link design, system test and integration.
  • Modelling of proposed architectures to determine the optimal solution.
  • Simulation of RF design.
  • Documentation of design including configuration management within Teamcenter.
  • Support laboratory hardware demonstrator development and test.

What We Are Looking For These are some of the key things we are looking for, although it’s not necessary to have experience in everything

  • Practical hands on experience of RF design of circuitry, ideally between DC and 30 GHz, but if you don’t have experience over this whole range then we’d still be interested to hear from you.
  • Experience of working with PCB layout personnel in an advisory capacity.
  • Hands on experience of using RF test and measurement equipment to develop and debug RF circuitry.
  • Ability to use RF and system modelling and simulation tools.
  • Ability to produce concise technical reports detailing design solutions and implementation.
  • Ability to understand and follow the business practices, such as design reviews, which come with working in a high technology defence environment.
  • Degree in relevant engineering or related scientific discipline (Electronics Engineering preferred).
  • As part of an electromechanical project, be willing to work closely with the mechanical team members to create a solution which addresses all design requirements.

It would be nice if you had

  • Experience in system level and sub-system integration and debug.
