Position Title: Radio Frequency (RF) Engineer

Location: Washington DC Capital Region

Position Summary: The Radio Frequency (RF) Engineer is responsible for supporting tasks related to radio frequency authorizations and spectrum planning. This role involves preparing new authorizations, modifying or deleting existing records to align with evolving organizational requirements, and developing frequency plans to improve interoperability among organizational components and key partners. The RF Engineer conducts basic propagation analyses and creates coverage plots to aid in engineering diagrams, focusing on achieving optimal system performance and cost efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform RF propagation analysis, coverage modeling, and link budget calculations using tools such as Motorola’s Propagation Modeling Software, ATDI, or iBwave.
  • Conduct site surveys and field RF testing to assess and validate signal coverage, interference, and performance metrics.
  • Analyze RF system performance data (RSSI, SINR, BER) and adjust system parameters to resolve performance issues or optimize network coverage.
  • Configure and align base stations, repeaters, combiners, antennas, and related RF infrastructure components to meet system requirements.
  • Support tasks related to radio frequency authorizations, including preparing new authorizations and modifying or deleting existing records.
  • Assist in spectrum planning and develop frequency plans to improve interoperability among organizational components and key partners.
  • Conduct basic propagation analyses and create coverage plots to aid in engineering diagrams.
  • Identify and mitigate sources of interference or signal degradation using spectrum analyzers, field test equipment, and monitoring tools.
  • Focus on achieving optimal system performance and cost efficiency in all engineering tasks.
  • Identify and propose potential sites for system infrastructure based on engineering design and propagation modeling, ensuring these sites meet operational requirements.
  • Review current tactical communications equipment configurations and provide suggestions for improvements to reduce costs and enhance performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and deployment of RF solutions.
  • Document RF designs, test results, field data, and recommendations in formal engineering reports and system documentation.

A reasonable estimate of the current base pay range for this position is $115,000.00 to $129,000.00 annually. Actual salary will be based on a variety of factors, including shift, location, experience, skill set, performance, licensure and certification, and business needs. The range for this position in other geographic locations may differ. Certain positions may also be eligible for variable incentive compensation, such as bonuses or commissions, that is not included in the base pay.

We’re looking for an experienced RF Design Engineer to join the Portsmouth based team. The multi-functional team is responsible for the design and development of RF and Microwave Instruments / equipment for Earth Observation satellites.

How You Will Contribute To The Team…

  • Design, simulate and optimise radio frequency / microwave circuitry and equipment.
  • Develop microwave systems architectures for elements within radar and radiometer instruments covering frequency range from a few MHz to hundreds of GHz.
  • Perform functional and performance analysis and decomposition of requirements to equipment and module level.
  • Support integration and validation of microwave equipment at instrument level.

About You…

  • Interested in bringing ideas to the table and working with Systems Engineers to shape instruments
  • Comfortable designing hardware and systems, depending on project requirements
  • Demonstrable experience of RF hardware design, development, analyses and verification methods.
  • Good knowledge and use of RF simulation tools such as Keysight ADS (Advanced Design System), Ansys HFSS and other RF simulation tools
  • Very familiar with the use of RF test equipment such as VNAs, Scopes, power meters, signal generators and spectrum analysers

What we’re looking for from you:

  • Antenna design and development experience
  • Electromagnetic simulation knowledge using tools such as Ansys HFSS or CST Studio
  • Knowledge of microwave frequencies ideally UHF and frequencies in excess of X-band
  • Good ability in the use of MATLAB
  • Degree or higher level qualification or equivalent experience
  • Excellent communication skills

Principal EMC & TEMPEST Testing Engineer

Job Description Leonardo UK is excited to be recruiting a Principal EMC Engineer for our Basildon site.

This site-based role will undertake EMC specification, design, development and test work on various Air / Land and Sea projects at system and component level.

The role also requires building and maintaining relationships with customers and suppliers to achieve cost effective and robust EMC solutions in various challenging environments.

The Principal EMC Engineer will also be required to contribute to our UKAS test team and carry out EMC testing and EMC training of other engineers. Thus, experience of UKAS audits and looking after the day to day running and capability enhancement and maintenance of an EMC test facility is essential. The successful applicant will be working in the ISP business unit’s Environmental test group as part of the Design Integrity Function under the Environmental Test Lab Manager.

Your impact This role is to provide EMC / TEMPEST design, development and test support to projects; this includes the development of EMC / TEMPEST requirements and providing robust cost-effective solutions. Customer and supplier liaison is also key to ensure the minimisation of through life EMC cost while offering an innovative and robust solution to our customers’ needs. The production of EMC / TEMPEST documentation for projects will be necessary along with approving suppliers’ documentation and test results. EMC testing forms a major part of the role, both in house and at external EMC test house (possibly at remote locations). The successful applicant will support the Basildon test facility UKAS audit schedule and accreditation. Other duties include EMC test house and equipment maintenance duties.

  • Design for EMC & TEMPEST.
  • Development of EMC & TEMPEST requirements from legislation and top-level system specifications.
  • Production of EMC & TEMPEST Plans for complex systems and components.
  • Supplier management for control of EMC design at sub-tier suppliers.
