Your Responsibilities Will Include

  • Development of novel antennas and related systems for civil and defence applications

Essential Experience Of The Antenna Electromagnetic Engineer

  • Experience with metal materials and antenna functionality, ideally with practical RF experience
  • Proficiency in CST software / HFSS for modelling and simulation of antennas

  • Previous grounds or technical maintenance experience is beneficial but not essential

Stevenage At MBDA, we are continuing to grow our Data Link Systems organisation, providing a world leading missile data link capability. A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an RF Systems Lead Engineer. You will be responsible for leading data link systems engineering work on a new weapons system programme, interfacing with both suppliers and customers, and providing technical leadership for junior RF systems engineers.

Salary: Circa £50,000 depending on experience

Dynamic (hybrid) working: typically 3 days per week on-site due to workload classification

Security Clearance: British Citizen or a Dual UK national with British citizenship.

The opportunity: As RF system lead engineer, you will be the main Data Links technical point of contact for a weapon system project. You will be responsible for coordinating the systems engineering aspects of the project, including supporting bids, defining the system architecture, and managing development activities such as requirements management, system modelling management, and system proving plans (V&V). You will lead a small team of RF systems engineers.

What we’re looking for from you: You will have an understanding of RF technologies, and system level design considerations for RF communication system. Ideally, you will be degree qualified in a STEM subject. You will have a strong background in systems engineering across the full product life cycle together with experience of managing suppliers. Customer facing skills are also highly desirable.

We’re looking for you to have an ability to work autonomously within a multi-skilled team with a good understanding and commitment to achieving project goals. You should also be able to perform technical investigations, provide problem assessments, and propose design solutions within a culture of innovative thinking.

We are looking for some of the following skills:

  • Managing internal suppliers, and external suppliers

  • Technical leadership of junior engineers

RF Engineering Internship – 6 or 12 months

Introduction

The RF Systems Group is responsible for delivering designs that range from small RF sub-modules through to complete wireless systems. The collaborative group works alongside other disciplines to deliver these services to clients and are therefore fortunate to work closely with a wide range of groups across the company.

Cambridge Consultants has deep expertise in wireless communication technologies, with one of the largest independent wireless development teams in the world. We work across the entire wireless landscape – from high-volume consumer applications such as portable internet-based devices, through to professional high-performance systems such as the air traffic control radios used to govern the US airspace. The markets that we address include telecommunications, healthcare, industrial, satellite, consumer and automotive. This breadth of wireless activity provides tremendous variety to our team.

Successful candidates can join us on a 6 or 12 month industrial placement.

What we can offer

As an RF Engineer Intern, with support from your mentors and peers, you will participate in the development of new ground-breaking wireless products, from initial concept through to product specification, design and verification. The role involves contributing to RF systems design, board-level RF circuit design and design validation of our clients’ products.

You will have the opportunity to work on ground-breaking wireless designs, for example:

  • Developing a novel air-interface and bespoke communication systems for the Ocado Smart Platform controlling hundreds of robots in grocery distribution centres
  • Prototyping the world’s largest commercial airborne antenna to deliver superfast 5G to every corner of the globe
  • Developing the Iridium Extreme satellite phone, the first truly-global ‘push-to-talk’ mobile communications system

Some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Component selection, board level RF circuit design and laboratory-based design validation
  • Prepare component level RF systems specifications for wireless systems, under supervision
  • Participate in the regulatory approval and/or field based design validation of our clients’ products
  • Where appropriate, create novel design solutions that will be of particular interest to our clients
  • As required, present designs, results and conclusions
  • Work as part of a close-knit, multi-disciplinary project team focused on delivering design solutions to our clients

What you can bring

We’re looking for a student currently pursuing a degree in a relevant field, such as engineering, electronics, computer science, mathematics, or physics, and eligible for an industrial placement year.

You’re someone who:

  • Has an interest in electronics hardware design and radio frequency or microwave/mmWave design.
  • Communicates effectively and enjoys working as part of a team.
  • Is passionate about current technology and stays up to date with new developments.

Developing innovative and imaginative solutions requires an inquisitive approach and a willingness to tackle complex problems. You should be keen to learn new skills and open to new approaches. Good oral and written communication skills will be key to interacting effectively within Cambridge Consultants and our clients’ organisations.

Experience with any of the following would be advantageous, though not essential:

  • Knowledge of wireless communication systems
  • Competence in driving RF test equipment
  • Programming with Python
