RF Systems Engineer

Portsmouth (3 days per week hybrid working) – 6 month contract – Pay rate £37.38 p/h PAYE basic (£42.81 p/h including holiday pay) or £50 p/h Umbrella

We are looking to recruit an RF Engineer for our client in the space and satellite industry. You will be working on a hybrid basis circa 3 days per week onsite in the Portsmouth office, working in the Terminals and TMA team. This team is responsible for the satellite communication terminals products which include antenna equipment and management software. The work of the team encompasses terminals for land, sea and air domains, however the primary focus at the Portsmouth site is for the development and sustainment of naval antennas for the maritime domain.

Responsibilities

  • Produce a specification from an RF (Radio Frequency) or Microwave requirement that defines frequencies of operation.
  • Define input and output interfaces.
  • Define performance criteria and define how to validate and verify performance by specifying a test strategy.
  • Produce System Diagrams and define RF budgets through an entire Rx / Tx chain.
  • Validate an RF design.

Requirements:

Essential

  • RF Knowledge
  • The demonstrated ability to master the design and/or perform analysis of circuits in the RF (Radio Frequency), Microwave and mm Wave frequency range.
  • Knowledge of methods with respect to: EM field theory and general RF theory; general RF circuit design; tools for 3D as well as 2.5D circuit design; material characteristics and behaviour at RF frequencies; RF measurement techniques; environmental effects on RF units.
  • Ability to provide sufficient detailed data and information about system elements to enable the implementation consistent with architectural entities as defined in models and views of the system architecture and in accordance with the allocated requirements.
  • Ability to verify the compliance of a detailed design solution toward baseline of validated requirements for a single sub-system / equipment / component / module.
  • Ability to work closely sharing both industrial and functional design view, from the very early stages of the design through the serial production phase and up to the in- service life of the product (whole product lifecycle), working in close collaboration between the Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and any other disciplines involved throughout the whole product lifecycle and/or in the Multifunctional Team (MFT).
  • Understand the organization, infrastructure, constraints and limitations of Program industrial planning, supported by Quality/supply chain.
  • Understand global systems/products and their interdependencies during industrialization phase.

Desirable

  • Military standards relating to Satellite Communications Systems (e.g. MIL-STD-188-164C).
  • Military satellite communications systems in the maritime domain.

Additional Information:

You will be required to hold a live UK MOD Secret Clearance (SC level) prior to starting.

Successful candidates will require

  • Proficient in RF fundamentals: impedance matching, Smith charts, passive RLC, filter design, linearity, harmonics, noise figure analysis etc.
  • Proficient in professional simulation tools such as AWR, as well as EDA tools such as PADS.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with lab instruments such as network analysers, spectrum analysers, signal generators and oscilloscopes.
  • Proven experience of design, simulation, prototyping, and testing of baseband, IF, and RF circuits
  • Expertise in schematic capture and PCB layout for multilayer RF designs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Experience In The Following Areas Would Be Highly Advantageous

  • Receivers, Transmitters, Synthesizers, VCOs, low noise amplifiers, power amplifiers, mixers and filters

  • Prediction and measurement of the Radar Cross Section of civil and military vehicles and structures is undertaken, particularly in relation to LO antenna design.
The candidate does not need to have experience in all of these areas, but a good general understanding of the principles involved in undertaking work of this nature would be of benefit.
The Engineer role will involve leading the delivery of innovative research projects to quality, time and budget while working with teams of scientific and engineering staff.

You’ll lead a team of skilled engineers, driving operational performance, technical excellence and continuous improvement in one of Europe’s most advanced RF test environments.

You’ll define the vision and strategy for RF test, ensuring safe, efficient and on-time delivery of complex test campaigns. Working closely with Engineering, Quality and Programme teams you’ll play a pivotal role in ensuring that our spacecraft meet the highest standards of performance and reliability.

About You We’re looking for a proactive and collaborative leader who combines deep technical knowledge with strong people and operational management skills:

  • Experience in RF testing within aerospace, defence or high-reliability communication systems
  • Proven ability to lead technical teams and manage complex operational environments
  • Understanding of RF test principles, measurement systems and payload performance validation
  • Excellent communication, leadership and stakeholder management skills
  • Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical, Electronic or Communications Engineering

The successful candidate will be working with an on-site team of around 4-5 people at first to commission a state-of-the-art over-the-air antenna testing facility for our novel Ka-band satcom terminal. This will include leading the set-up and operation of a brand new Compact Antenna Test Range (CATR). You will be responsible for highly technical calibration and qualifications of the terminals. Using your RF/antenna background, you will integrate MATLAB and Python-based control software to control and synchronise the CATR measurement system with a variety of RF infrastructure, including active RF networks, the satcom terminal (API controlled) and RF test equipment including a Keysight PNA-X, PNA, spectrum analysers, signal generators, power sensors, calibration kits and more.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an engineer that wants to drive a highly technical, novel calibration and measurement system to a production-standard. The successful candidate will own multiple technical development workstreams to use statistical analysis of large RF measurement data-sets to develop our calibration and qualification routines to new heights in order to improve terminal throughput without sacrificing quality.

CATR Commissioning and Development

  • Commission and run state-of-the-art Compact Antenna Test Range (CATR) systems
  • Run calibration and verification measurements of terminals as part of production
  • Run over-the-air development activity in the CATR for next-generation terminals
  • Maintain and develop MATLAB control scripts for the CATR system

Antenna Calibration and Verification

  • Develop, calibrate, and verify the performance of the calibration system
  • Integrate calibration methodologies into system frameworks
  • Develop scripts to validate system functionality

Documentation and Reporting

  • Document calibration procedures, methodologies, and results for internal reference and regulatory compliance
  • Generate reports summarizing findings, including defects and performance metrics
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders to convey results and recommendations

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Matlab
  • Experience with calibration and verification of antenna elements such as active phased arrays, low noise amplifiers, power amplifiers, frequency conversion, ADC & DAC
  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with over the air RF measurements in anechoic chambers (e.g., Compact Antenna Test Ranges (CATRs), Spherical/Planer Near Field Scanners using RF test equipment equipment (e.g., spectrum analyzers, vector network analysers and signal generators)
  • Solid understanding of antenna principles, including digital and analog circuits, signal processing, and communication protocols
  • Prior experience in antenna engineering, calibration, or software development is highly desirable
