About the job

The RF & Microwave Design Team provide innovative solutions serving aerospace, defence, and space market spaces, primarily in the design and development of radar and telecommunication products.

In this role, you will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of engineers to design, test, and troubleshoot RF systems. You will support the development activities throughout the entire product lifecycle. This will include understanding customer requirements and developing collaborative relationships during the early lifecycle phases, as well as support detailed design reviews and handover to manufacturing.

The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of RF circuit design, microwave techniques, and electromagnetic theory. Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail are essential for success in this role. Additionally, a passion for innovation in the defence and space industry, along with the ability to adapt to evolving technologies and methodologies, will contribute to your excellence in this position.

Main responsibilities:

  • Design and develop RF circuits that meet the technical requirements and company processes for manufacture.
  • Conduct analysis and simulation of RF circuits using commercial tools and theory knowledge.
  • Perform RF testing, characterisation, and optimisation to ensure functionality of the product.
  • Conduct and contribute to design reviews and technical meetings.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate RF circuits into systems.
  • Assist manufacturing to resolve technical problems as required.
  • Ensure Manufacturing Packages (BoMs, drawings etc.) are generated and maintained using controlled Engineering change processes.
  • Supervise, and provide guidance to, technicians engaged in the design and evaluation of components, sub-assemblies and assemblies.
  • Keep up to date with technological advances by networking, attending seminars, forging links with universities etc.
  • Develop strong working relationships with other team members and production engineering to ensure that designs are fit for purpose and are capable of being manufactured cost efficiently.

Education:

  • Bachelor or master’s degree in Electronics Engineering or equivalent qualification/experience

Knowledge and experience:

  • Strong understanding of microwave techniques and electromagnetic theory.
  • Proven experience in RF electronics design, simulation, testing, characterisation, and optimisation.
  • Familiarity with RF measurement equipment and techniques.
  • Knowledge of defence and space industry standards and regulations is a plus

  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

The EMC Engineering Team

Come and join our expanding Electronic Warfare Operations Support Group (EWOS) which is made up of 60+ electronic warfare specialists. From all manner of backgrounds, our engineers, scientists, and ex-military personnel combine their experience to help our customers achieve the true operational potential and help keep their people and platforms safe.

We are continuing to grow our team at Porton Down, Salisbury, working on key state-of-the-art research, development, and delivery projects, led by our technical customer, Dstl.

The primary role is to support test and development of RF Receiver hardware in various environments including laboratory, ground-based field trials, airborne trials and synthetic environment testing. This will require using a range of different RF equipment to cover direct inject testing, free-space testing and chamber testing, including field trials of RF receiver equipment in the UK and abroad.

The role will require technical autonomy, liaising with military stakeholders, academia, industry and international partners, to assess the performance of receiver hardware, developing improvements, and providing advice.

A secondary focus will be on implementation and testing of real-time algorithms deployed to Radio Frequency System on Chip (RFSoC) boards, within a larger laboratory setup.

Additionally, the role will enable you to design said algorithms, working with various technical stakeholders to derive and capture requirements, ensuring constraints and limitations are understood prior to deployment.

Given the scale of the main project this role will work on, there are opportunities to work on all stages of the engineering lifecycle, including trials support both in the UK and internationally. You will have the prospect to develop into a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on RF Sensing and Electronics and their use in modern EW applications.

Essential:

  • Understanding of RF sensor systems and Test & Evaluation (T&E) practices.
  • Previous experience of working with standard RF laboratory equipment (Vector Signal Analysers, Signal Generators & Oscilloscopes). This includes understanding how to set-up and test RF systems to assess their performance.
  • Experience creating scripts/programmes (MATLAB, Python, C++).
  • STEM Degree or extensive experience with RF Electronics.

Desirable:

  • Design & Development of EW models (including understanding mission objectives and functions expected to be performed).
  • Strong background in EW systems and concepts, including radar systems.
  • Previous experience working in synthetic testing environments.
  • Experience Integration/calibration of hardware and software models into a laboratory environment.
  • Experience with either C++, embedded C++, or VHDL programming.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Be a recognised technical expert in Power Systems, associated components & equipment.
  • Provide technical ownership to projects to support the development of safe, technically compliant, and cost-effective solutions at holistic Power System level.
  • Undertake all aspects of Power Systems design: – including modelling, analysis, and simulation of Power Systems, using standard industrial design tools such as: MATLAB/SIMULINK, ETAP etc.

Position Title: Radio Frequency (RF) Engineer

Position Summary:

The Radio Frequency (RF) Engineer is responsible for supporting tasks related to radio frequency authorizations and spectrum planning. This role involves preparing new authorizations, modifying or deleting existing records to align with evolving organizational requirements, and developing frequency plans to improve interoperability among organizational components and key partners. The RF Engineer conducts basic propagation analyses and creates coverage plots to aid in engineering diagrams, focusing on achieving optimal system performance and cost efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform RF propagation analysis, coverage modeling, and link budget calculations using tools such as Motorola’s Propagation Modeling Software, ATDI, or iBwave.
  • Conduct site surveys and field RF testing to assess and validate signal coverage, interference, and performance metrics.
  • Analyze RF system performance data (RSSI, SINR, BER) and adjust system parameters to resolve performance issues or optimize network coverage.
  • Configure and align base stations, repeaters, combiners, antennas, and related RF infrastructure components to meet system requirements.
  • Support tasks related to radio frequency authorizations, including preparing new authorizations and modifying or deleting existing records.
  • Assist in spectrum planning and develop frequency plans to improve interoperability among organizational components and key partners.
  • Conduct basic propagation analyses and create coverage plots to aid in engineering diagrams.
  • Identify and mitigate sources of interference or signal degradation using spectrum analyzers, field test equipment, and monitoring tools.
  • Focus on achieving optimal system performance and cost efficiency in all engineering tasks.
  • Identify and propose potential sites for system infrastructure based on engineering design and propagation modeling, ensuring these sites meet operational requirements.

Certain states and localities require employers to post a reasonable estimate of salary range. A reasonable estimate of the current base pay range for this position is $115,000.00 to $129,000.00 annually. Actual salary will be based on a variety of factors, including shift, location, experience, skill set, performance, licensure and certification, and business needs. The range for this position in other geographic locations may differ. Certain positions may also be eligible for variable incentive compensation, such as bonuses or commissions, that is not included in the base pay.
